White House warns GOP Biden impeachment will backfire

The White House is warning House Republicans that a potential impeachment inquiry into President Biden will only backfire on an already fractured conference.

The possibility of an impeachment inquiry appears to be growing, with Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) giving signals recently that one could be launched as soon as September.

Republicans have hammered the White House over allegations of corruption in the form of the business and lobbying work of Hunter Biden, the president’s son, arguing the younger Biden used his ties to power to win business in Ukraine.

Conservative media is also shouldering into the Biden-corruption narrative, particularly in the context of former President Trump’s two federal indictments being brought by Biden’s DOJ with a number of Republicans and GOP voters itching to take a fight to Biden over what they claim are politically-motivated investigations of his predecessor.

An impeachment inquiry would do something they don't want--exposure. At least two GOP House members are pulling the Sgt. Schultz routine.

I tend to agree that a FORMAL impeachment inquiry is a waste of time. Senate will NEVER convict.

Correct. McCarthy could publicly blame stonewalling of subpoenas by the DOJ as the reason for the formal inquiry.

Agreed. The facts have to come out and be presented to the American People, especially to voters in states that have senators up for re-election. On December 9, 2020, Hunter Biden disclosed that the DOJ is investigating his tax and international business activities. David Weiss, the Trump-appointed U.S. Attorney for the District of Delaware, opened the investigation in 2018. On June 20, 2023, Hunter Biden entered into an agreement with the DOJ to plead guilty to not paying his 2017 and 2018 taxes on time for a probation sentence. The DOJ also agreed not to prosecute him for owning a gun while under the influence if he agreed never to own a gun again and to be drug-free for two years. President Joe Biden is not being investigated as part of the inquiry into his son’s business activities.

On January 11, 2023, Rep. James Comer, Chair of the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability, sent a letter to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen requesting information about the bank records of certain members of President Biden’s family, which the Treasury Department provided. House Oversight Committee Republican staff subsequently issued a 30-page memo focused on payments that President Biden’s relatives had received from companies run by foreign nationals. This memo did not directly link any payments from foreign companies to President Biden himself.

A cornerstone of our justice system is that all Americans must be treated equally, whether they are a President, a former President, a family member of a President, or an ordinary citizen.
