Washington — Hawaii Gov. Josh Green said Sunday he wished sirens would have alerted residents on Maui to evacuate as a wildfire quickly spread through Lahaina, calling the response by the island's now former emergency chief "utterly unsatisfactory to the world."
"Of course, as a person, as a father, as a doctor, I wish all the sirens went off," Green told "Face the Nation." "The challenge that you've heard — and it's not to excuse or explain anything — the challenge has been that historically, those sirens are used for tsunamis."
"Do I wish those sirens went off? Of course I do," he said. "I think that the answer that the emergency administrator from Maui, who's resigned, was of course utterly unsatisfactory to the world. But it is the case that that we've historically not used those kinds of warnings or fires."

“some Lefty Democrat weirdo crap about the water being sacred.”
When were lived on Maui, DH was a contractor for a governmental agency. In order to construct anything, they were forced by the local shakedown artists to have some big kahuna come in and shake some chicken bones or something. It cost money. They’re very spiritual there, but not in a good way.
I remember way back in the late 50’s early 60’s that our local fire department alarm system had two different warning systems. One long siren for fires, an oscillating siren...well that was for a nuclear attack.
I'm sure the MSM would have pointed that out, if this had happened while Trump was in the White House.
BINGO! Also the first company/lawyer to suggest eminent domain should be locked away for good.
At least he admits the emergency manager was wrong. That’s more than we can get out of Jackson county Oregon. They had 6 plus hours to warn us but decided since we were mostly senior CITIZENS we might get confused. There was no confusion when we saw flames in our carports!
No one has ever apologized and the emergency manager still has her job.
But then, some special members of FR say I made it all up, so there ya go!!
Denial is a nasty habit.
But for the love of Christ will everybody stop trying to blame someone and stop with the conspiracy crap!
Bottom line - a small brush fire that was 100% contained was whipped into a frenzy by 80MPH WINDS!
In the 22 years I lived there (+ the 10 years removed) Lahaina has never experienced this - it is leeward of the trades and usually very calm. That is why you don't see people windsurfing Lahaina. Up the road a ways into Kahana sometimes, but never Lahaina.
But he is a democrat, Jim!
Thank you for the clearity.
“Sounds like the higher ups have found their fall guy,”
Exactly like Buttegeig, DeWine, and the railroad were trying to shove the blame for the East Palestine spill on the lowly Fire Chief.
“If those tsunami horns had been activated ... many more people would have died fleeing inland and into the fire”
That’s what I was thinking. I recall that when I worked at a resort in Wailea, the sirens sounded a couple times and people were encouraged to go upcountry.
The ones who ran into the water in this case were the smart ones.
Here in Upstate, when we might have a power outage, the Utility company calls EVERY customer...Of course we call everyone we know to make sure they're aware.
Turn on the sirens. Then people will check their cell phones.
This is what affirmative action hiring gets you. Death and disaster.
IOW, D(iversity), I(nclusivity), E(quity) really does mean “die”. Considering nothing is based on merit one can imagine more accidents happening due to incompetence.
And why the hell is there a water shortage? People Desalination Plants are available! Maui is surrounded by the Pacific! There is no excuse for a water shortage. Ditto for California. If I were a leader of Arizona or Nevada I'd sue California for stealing water from the desert states.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desalination
“An estimate in 2018 found that “18,426 desalination plants are in operation in over 150 countries. They produce 87 million cubic meters of clean water each day and supply over 300 million people.”[7]: 24 The energy intensity has improved: It is now about 3 kWh/m3 (in 2018), down by a factor of 10 from 20-30 kWh/m3 in 1970.[7]: 24 Nevertheless, desalination represented about 25% of the energy consumed by the water sector in 2016.[7]: 24 ”
“There are now about 21,000 desalination plants in operation around the globe. The biggest ones are in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Israel. The world's largest desalination plant is located in Saudi Arabia (Ras Al-Khair Power and Desalination Plant) with a capacity of 1,401,000 cubic meters per day.[31]”
Hawaii is one of the few states I have never been to, and I once missed a trivia question about who was the last King in the united states.
Regardless if they had sounded the siren for 20 seconds, then a few minutes later did it again etc, people would wonder what was up, and look at their cel phone or turn on radio/tv
if I get in my car to flee something my first thought would be to turn on the radio to get more info, but maybe I am overestimating people
The Governor is responsible for the emergency response. It's likely that the people in charge of the emergency response are political appointees, so they have no qualifications.
I’m wondering
1) Don’t we still have the Emergency Broadcast System for things like this?
and
2) How hard would it have been to drum it into people’s heads that the siren doesn’t mean “Tsunami Coming. Head For the Hills,” but rather “Something Bad Coming: Radio Or TV Will Tell You More”?
Regarding listening to the radio. Quite a few said they were saved by AM radio. Ford and several other companies want to remove AM radio from their car serve.
“The first thing they should is to take all of the electric supply underground”
A good idea Garden Island but simply not feasable.
Too many deep gulches, too far to go, too much blue rock...
Billions of $$ and years of work. And too many easements to get from people who just won’t allow them.
Yep. The “journalists” should have asked him why he isn’t resigning.
