To mask, or not to mask?

That is the question facing many doctors, public health officials and concerned citizens worldwide, as cases of COVID-19 once again tick upward.

Meanwhile, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned on Thursday that there’s a new, “highly mutated variant” of the coronavirus named BA.2.86 that’s spreading worldwide.

Recent data from the New York state Department of Health, released Aug. 2, showed that COVID cases spiked by 55% over the prior week, with an average of 824 reported cases per day across the state.

The rise in COVID-19 cases isn’t limited to New York: The CDC recorded 10,320 US hospital admissions for COVID-19 in the week ending August 5 — a 14.3% increase from the week prior.

I haven’t heard anyone mention any surge in real life. If they want to scare people again they need to pump up their propaganda.

There hasn’t been a “summer surge.” Just look at the graphs on Worldometer. There have been minor increases followed by decreases. Cases are currently no higher than they were in May, and lower than they were in March.

Conclusions
While no cause-effect conclusions could be inferred from this observational analysis, the lack of negative correlations between mask usage and COVID-19 cases and deaths suggest that the widespread use of masks at a time when an effective intervention was most needed, i.e., during the strong 2020-2021 autumn-winter peak, was not able to reduce COVID-19 transmission. Moreover, the moderate positive correlation between mask usage and deaths in Western Europe also suggests that the universal use of masks may have had harmful unintended consequences.
