Aldi to buy 400 Winn-Dixie, Harveys Supermarkets

Aldi plans to acquire approximately 400 Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket locations across the southeastern U.S., the German-owned supermarket chain announced Wednesday.

The decision comes as Aldi seeks to expand its presence in the south, and as part of a larger divestiture from Winn-Dixie parent company Southeastern Grocers, according to a news release.

Southeastern Grocers also owns 28 stores and four pharmacies under the Hispanic grocery store brand Fresco y Más. The company said the stores will continue operating as usual under its new owner, Fresco Retail Group, LLC.

Aldi has invested $2.5 billion in its southeastern expansion since the mid-90s, according to the grocer. The chain opened a regional headquarters and distribution center outside of Mobile, Alabama earlier this year.

“Like Aldi, Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket have long histories and many loyal customers in the southeast and we look forward to serving them in the years to come,” Aldi CEO Jason Hart said. “The time was right to build on our growth momentum and help residents in the Southeast save on their grocery bills.”

Another foreign entity takes over an American company. Winn-Dixie and Harvey's are big players in the Southeast.

I did not even know Winn-Dixie was still in business. Their stores all closed in my city back in the late 90’s.

The Winn Dixie was scary that I went to in Gainesville.
I was the only white dude a couple times.
It was near a homeless camp in the woods.

I don’t get impressed easily except when my neighbor’s daughter walked by in a bikini headed to the beach yesterday.

It is a unique operation. For the limited range of goods they offer the prices are very good. And the quality of most is comparable to or superior to the large chain groceries. Checkout lines can be long since there’s only 3 or 4 employees working at any time. Their produce doesn’t keep as long so it’s best to use it within a day or two of purchase. Basically, it’s a European style store with a German feel to the product selection. Acquired taste.

Winn-Dixie originated in Jacksonville FL by the Davis family. Interestingly, so far none of the local Jax tv stations have covered this except for an email alert a couple of hours ago. Kinda sad to see the company go to foreign ownership. I think Publix has been eating their lunch locally shoppers-wise, but Winn-Dixie’s still a local power.

German businesses in some segments are moving significant operations to the United States. This is because of demographic decline and energy problems related to the Ukraine war. The US will benefit greatly. It’s not as if they can pack it up and take it home.

I’m a bit surprised as grocery stores are highly competitive. Walmart, SAMS and Costco have taken the must-have staples marketplace. Publix and a couple of high-end specialty stores have taken the high profit prepared foods and “green”/vegan end of the market. My guess is that the Germans plan on upgrading the stores to the higher-class end.

Here in Connecticut, we have ShopRite. They are a cooperative, not a centralized company, so the stores are owned by individual owners. This keeps the quality up (for the most part) and foreign purchasers away. The average owner has 3 or 4 stores, but some have more.

Twenty five years ago I was impressed with the Aldi business model. A store location requires two employees to function. A few times in my family raising years when I needed to live on a very tight budget, Aldi was a God-send.

My kids at college would buy their food there. Very easy to plan and portion from their items offered.

They carry unique items at good prices in their “Aldi finds”. They carry lamb chops and fish products and their chicken prices are usually very good. Under Trump, they had eggs at .39/ dozen once. I don’t see how they could transport it for that but it seems like a long long time ago. Cheap wine is good there.
