~The FReeper Canteen Presents~ Road Trip: Fairchild Air Force Base, Washington
Fairchild Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base, located in the northwest United States in eastern Washington, approximately twelve miles southwest of Spokane.
The host unit at Fairchild is the 92nd Air Refueling Wing (92 ARW) assigned to the Air Mobility Command's Eighteenth Air Force. The 92 ARW is responsible for providing air refueling, as well as passenger and cargo airlift and aero-medical evacuation missions supporting U.S. and coalition conventional operations as well as U.S. Strategic Command strategic deterrence missions.

Fairchild AFB was established 81 years ago in 1942 as the Spokane Army Air Depot and is named in honor of General Muir S. Fairchild (1894–1950); a World War I aviator from the state, he was the Vice Chief of Staff of the Air Force at the time of his death.
During the Cold War, Fairchild was a Strategic Air Command (SAC) base for 45 years (1947–1992), with bombers and tankers, as well as missiles for a brief period (1960–1965).
Fairchild is home to a wide variety of units and missions. Most prominent is its air refueling mission, with two wings, one active, the 92nd Air Refueling Wing, and one national guard, the 141st Air Refueling Wing, both flying the Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker. The 92nd Air Refueling Wing comprises the 92nd Operations Group which provides air mobility for America through air refueling, airlift, and operational support, the 92d Maintenance Group which provides maintenance support to world-class aircraft and equipment, the 92nd Mission Support Group which provides the foundation for support and morale of Fairchild and the 92nd Medical Group.
Over 5,200 active duty Air Force, Air National Guard, and tenant organization military and civilian employees work on Fairchild, making the base the largest employer in Eastern Washington. Fairchild's annual economic impact on the Spokane community is approximately $427 million, constituting 13 percent of the local economy.

I spent 2 weeks there as part of the 940th AF Reserve unit in 1982. It was kind of sad because the active duty people I worked with were still grieving after one of their “family” was killed after an auto accident following their Christmas party.
On the KC135 flight home I got to lay next to the boomer 42000 ft over Idaho as we refueled several A10 Warthogs. Amazing! Oh!...and upon landing back at Mather AFB we had to do a go around because of a near miss with a private plane.

Thanks for posting. As a Gonzaga ROTC cadet, we spent a lot of time in their training areas. Those experiences helped me to survive a variety of situations, such as Augmentation Reserve Forcc Commander in Germany. It was basically an infantry platoon to support our local Nike Hercules battery.
On my last one, I really got into it with the Chief Evaluator. So much so, he focused his comments at me in the outbrief, much to the delight of the officers in the Nike Hercules battery.
Whar made it one of the highlights of my undistinguished military career, were the remarks of the Deputy CG, BG Archie Cannon. After finding me in the audience, he pointed to me and said, LT, I”ll take that hit for you. Anytime you want to give your soldiers extra training, you have my express permission.
I thought for sure I’d end up in Finance Corp, as I majored in Public Accounting. LOL, I ended up in Air Defense Artillery.

Howdy, Kathy.
I hope it isn’t a pull-your-hair-out Monday.
Looks like some rain showers are crawling over the mountains towards town. Thick, dark clouds. Maybe you’ll get a little something to give your lawn a drink.

Hiya radu, sorry I missed you last night, I was fine-tuning my computer and wanted to stay focused.
Finally got it up and running like I want for the most part.
Not much else this weekend for me other than visiting Robin, son and the pups; we've cooled down to below average temps which is fine to me.
How was your weekend, any museum time? Kittehs being good?

I was late getting back to the Canteen last night and you were already gone by the time I got here. I was happy to see your post about your new computer. NO FUN being without!
Sounds like you had a good weekend overall. Relaxing with Robin and those adorable pups AND cooler temps. WOOHOO on those temps!
It was a good weekend though tiring. Non-stop both days and my feet and back are still cranky. But it was a lot of fun.
It did leave me too tired and sore to deal with getting fresh corn ready for the freezer Saturday night, as I’d intended to do. So I went back today to get a dozen ears, fresh-picked this morning, and now that supper’s finished, I’m going to tackle it. Not looking forward to the work but this winter, I’ll definitely appreciate it. LOL
The kittehs have been pretty good lately and I’m thankful no one’s sick. Losing two last month is more than enough and I hope to lose no more the rest of the year.

That's awesome that Fairchild AFB is profiled! Fairchild AFB is not far from us over on the west side of Spokane near the civilian airport GEG.
A couple months ago, four F35-Bs flew into the Coeur d'Alene "Pappy Boyington Field." The pilots were right on the flight line and talked to the crowd. They all flew back to Fairchild AFB to park the F35s for the night, then the pilots ferried back to Coeur d'Alene to spend the night. We were SO close to them when they parked on the apron.
