On his deathbed, my friend’s grandfather (I’ll call him Matis) revealed how, as a Lithuanian, he was forced to enroll in a pro-Nazi para-military group shortly after the Nazi occupation of his small town near Vilnius.
He referred to this group as the “Lithuanian Rifles.” As a Nazi officer pointed out, his other options were to become a Social Democrat or a communist, and the Nazis didn’t care for these people. Social Democrats were sent to camps, and communists were shot.
Matis’ duty was to patrol his small town, unarmed, with other Lithuanian Rifles and report back to the Nazis. He didn’t like Nazis, but he hated communists, and being a Lithuanian Rifle was better than a camp or a bullet. Besides, Germany was the land of art and science. Germans were civilized, and the communists were animals. Good riddance to the Stalinists who now found themselves under the gun. Also, Germany was winning the war.
Months after enlisting as a Lithuanian Rifle, Matis, in his mid 30’s, married and father to three children, began to hear insane rumors that the Germans were rounding up Jewish men and teens in nearby towns and shooting them in the forest.

It has happened here...past tense.
I’m not saying “it can’t happen here,” but this one little item explains the huge chasm between Europe in the 1930s and the U.S. today.
Forget about patrolling the neighborhood unarmed. If I see someone out for a leisurely walk with his dog in my neighborhood, I assume there’s at least a 1-in-3 chance the guy is packing a firearm.
You have GOP types happy to act as the kapos for the Democrats.
Just remember, Matis chose NOT to fight the Nazis but to become one of their pawns instead. This is the true reality of most of humanity. Most WILL choose to save their life over yours. And then they will think they are heros since they did not pull the trigger, they only covered the injured men and boys with dirt to suffocate the survivers.
We should have put a bullet in Matis’s head before he died of natural causes.

The scariest part was the quotes from Yuri Bezmenoz KGB defector.
He was trying to warn us that our country had been infiltrated, and he thought we had maybe 10 years left, before it was completely taken over. He said these things in the 1980's.

Yes, I thought that too. I really have no sympathy for his deathbed halfassed confession. Glad he was burdened and hopefully his soul went south.

‘”It” has already happened here. And we had guns. It happened in 2020 and it will happen again in 2024. In 2025, the Republicans will say, “ Wait until 2028, We will take both Houses of Congress and the White House.”
We have been scrupulously non- violent, and repaid with subjugation.
The only legitimate moral course for the man in the story was, perhaps at the point he saw the signs go up to round up Jews, but probably earlier, to organize armed resistance and start killing Nazis.
I'm sure he was advised by his betters "stay nonviolent". It's comforting to cowards to insist that they are somehow effectively and morally "non violent resisting", but the truth is he was a reluctant but obedient collaborator.
Obviously many of his country men didn't take that route, and sought after the war to punish him.
Rather than admit his paricipation in attrocities, he again took the coward's way out. And hid his identity and fled abroard.
The lesson of this story isn't "stay peaceful", it is "become deadly", and when it becomes necessary act like a man and a soldier, not a child and a pussy.
If the author was helping people stiffen their spines for the inevitable with his writing it would have some value.
He is not, so I have no use for him. I certainly don't believe subscribing to his publication will help anyone but him. He's a conservative grifter, something I have had enough of.
Should make it a national holiday here.
When the violence happens, it needs to be overwhelming, organized violence. Small acts of violence will be ruthlessly suppressed.
That's exactly what the Soviets were going to do to him. That's exactly what the Nazi's were going to do to him.
So what choice did Matis have? Should he have volunteered to step into that pit with the Jews?
