If you logged onto Twitter following Barbie’s opening-weekend success, you might have been one of the well over one hundred thousand users who noticed a curious image. It depicted President Joe Biden wearing a blush-colored suit, accompanied by former President Barack Obama dressed in his own rosy ensemble. Stamped in magenta script on the picture of the leader of the free world: Barbie.
The image was manipulated—the Democratic fundraiser who posted it, Jon Cooper, said it was photoshopped or AI-generated; a Twitter content note labeled it the latter. But it isn’t a surprise that some users were fooled. Barbiecore has been everywhere. And if there is one sure thing in Washington, it is that the political classes will always feel compelled to weigh in on cultural moments in their constant quest for relevance.
That reliable truth has been on full display as America heads into the depths of summer. On the right, conservative influencers like Ben Shapiro are burning Barbie dolls and decrying how “woke” the film is. Republican lawmakers like Texas Senator Ted Cruz have slammed it for displaying a map with a disputed border.
Democratic politicians, for their part, have leaned into the trend. “This Barbie wants Congress to pass the #PROAct to protect every worker’s right to organize,” tweeted Washington Senator Patty Murray last week along with an image of a doll holding a sign in favor.

- they could care less,
-haven’t gone to the movies in centuries,
-reject Hollywood,
-don’t have a TV,
-don’t carry a balance on their credit card,
-no longer follow football,
…in 3…2…
The vehemence wherewith the Barbie movie has been rejected by the cultural right nearly has the result of causing me to see it in a theatre. You can be a half hour late and still not miss the show.
Wow
I don’t have a credit 💳 card 💳
And I don’t care about football 🏈 much, either
😜
Saw their picture - about right for their cult following
These people are dangerous. They DGAF about the consequences of their decisions, but they will align themselves with popular movements to gain power.
I have heard that the movie is actually subversive to feminist messaging, the way the movie starship troopers is.
“Waiting for people who swear they have no interest in this film, to post that…
- they could care less,”
I couldn’t care less. At least not about this Barbie movie.
“-haven’t gone to the movies in centuries,”
Decades, actually. It’s a matter of cost and convenience. Movie theater prices are too expensive. I’m a voracious fan of the movies. I do all my movie watching through cable tv, internet streaming, and home video. In the 1970s-1980s I was going to the movies once a week, every week. Now, I haven’t been to a movie theater since the 1990s.
“-reject Hollywood,”
I do and I don’t. I reject their politics. I don’t reject the art of the movies.
“-don’t have a TV,”
I have a tv. I’ve always had a tv. Recently bought myself a new 32 inch screen tv.
“-don’t carry a balance on their credit card,”
I do.
“-no longer follow football,”
Never followed football to begin with. Never followed ANY sport in my life. Ever since I was a kid, I found sports boring and still do.
It reminds me a little of how guys in the 80s started to wear shades like on Top Gun or dress like Don Johnson. Or now girls started dressing like Madonna.
That was herd mentality, but at least that was guys imitating guys and gals imitating gals.
I don’t have any pink shirts in my wardrobe. And I’m not about to buy one.
Post of the thread.
Well-done.

I swear I have no interest in this film, past the same involved difference that compelled me to watch the Nicholas Berg video, which I did to reinforce in me what we are up against.
I care greatly about this as a cultural marker. It is not a “feminist movie”, it is about the hate of males, says the Critical Drinker and Bill Whittle.
I haven’t gone to the movies in centuries.
I reject Hollywood, but not movies.
I have a television, but only watch movies on it.
I don’t carry a balance on my credit card.
I still follow football in its fashion, but no longer the way I once did. I discuss it with people who do, and I still watch it because at our age, it is something my best friend is still interested in, so we have an activity we can do together. (Yes, I still have a “best friend”...:)
It’s couldn’t care less. That makes me think of “irregardless”.
Top Gun Maverick was a must see in theater format.
No CC debt, and I am down to only tennis which I’m certain I will quit watching soon enough.
(but at least that was guys imitating guys and gals imitating gals.)
Ah, the good old days......
I have no interest in the film
Haven’t gone to the movies in years (15 I think)
Hate Hollywood
Only have one credit card Amex and it’s paid off monthly
I do watch football.. not soccer and screw women’s lesbian team USA
Got 5 tvs though!
Basically both sides have nothing better to do the criticize movies. After weeks of hearing all about sound of freedom now we hear about Barbie. Both sides needs a life.
Can’t decide between Barbie or Sound of Freedom. Both have such cultural significance (sarc)
Not every man can pull it off.
LOL! I forgot about that movie.
One of the greatest cult films ever.
Financed by Michael Nesmith.
Harry Dean Stanton’s line about ordinary people is one for the centuries.
The democrats have been flooding the minds of citizens for years trying to keep their thoughts moving so fast from one moronic thing to another so they can’t settle on one topic like murder, thievery, lying... It acts as a buffer so they can deflect any thought in a direction that doesn’t cover their tracks. And they will lock on to it until it gets redundant and they move to the next topic so John Q will forget the first one or the real truth of either. The art of misdirection. Most of Saul Alinsky’s rules for radicals.
