RINCON, Ga. — A Georgia Lowe’s store employee has been fired after trying to stop thieves from stealing thousands of dollars worth of stuff.
Police said three people came into the store in Rincon and loaded up their shopping cart with about $2,100 worth of merchandise.
As they were trying to leave the store without paying, employee Donna Hansbrough, 68, grabbed the cart, trying to stop them, police said.
[snip]
As for Hansbrough, she was fired from Lowe’s for violating the store’s policy, police said.
She had been employed at the store for 13 years.

Too many big box stores think they can just pass on higher prices to cover up the shop lifting.
We need to start making a list of stores who have fired employees who attempted to stop shoplifting and put them on the NO MORE BUD LIST.
They know the rules. 13 years flushed down the toilet.
They deserve every single theft. You can’t require employees to risk their lives but you don’t need to take their job for trying to prevent theft.
So all us white people should shoplift from Lowes to balance out the equation so they don’t get called Racist.
The A/C unit I walked out with didn’t work right. I’ll take a cash refund. :D
BTW, what’s the difference between walking out with merch or just grabbing a cash register and walking out? It’s all theft just the same.
Not worth it. If the stores didn’t want people to steal, they would set up and staff the stores accordingly. But they didn’t and they don’t. Just take your cues from corporate and try not to think too much about it.
Fire the person who made the policy and give her a raise!!
<>Then 80% of the thefts should be by whites. Otherwise, Lowe’s is racist.<>
People on drugs or alcohol cause 30% of traffic fatalities.
By your logic, the 70% sober people are the real menace.
Walmart owns Lowe’s?
There was another one where the employee was fired for taking videos of the thieves and their vehicle, to assist the police.
I can understand avoiding a physical confrontation, but what about photo/video recording of the incident, for which at least one employee was terminated?
A Colorado supermarket employee was fired after he recorded three men stealing approximately $500 worth of laundry detergent from the store on Father’s Day. Santino Burrola, the King Soopers employee, was alerted to a theft in progress at the store and the first thing he thought to do was pull out his phone and record it.
The manager on duty stepped up to me and told me that if I ever did that again, he would see me fired.
Maybe your stopping the crime deprived him of his "cut"!
A sympathetic judge and jury, with a sizable award or settlement to the fired employee would tend to mitigate the punitive behavior against the employee.
I doubt they would win, but some actuary probably ran the numbers on payoffs of fired that actually sue vs injuries and suits by criminals.
What “was right” in the past doesn’t seem to matter now.
Yes.
If this were me, I would be taking stuff in the store as they were escorting me out. Apparently, they can’t stop you once you have merchandise in your hands.
Then I’d come back later with a pickup and start clearing shit from the parking lot displays.
Not necessarily true. My wife sees thieves at Lowes all the time, very few "POC" types.
It doesn't matter, all retail stores have this rule against confronting thieves.
