Another case of locally contracted malaria has been detected in Florida, bringing the national tally to eight.
Health officials said the patient was diagnosed last week in Sarasota County, southwest Florida, where the other cases in the state were also detected.
It brings Florida's tally to seven — with five detected last month and one in May — alongside a case in Texas revealed in June in a 21-year-old National Guardsman.
They mark the first cases of domestically-transmitted malaria spotted in the US for more than two decades, in a sign the disease may be gaining a foothold here.

Well, I do spend a fair amount of my time in Florida. I guess I’ll just have to drink more Vodka Tonics. The British in India put that quinine in there for a reason.
Why should should anybody be surprised that large scale conversion of productive land into fetid wetlands would result in this?

Ironically, the same, cheap drug that was so successful at treating the Covid virus, hydroxychloroquine, is a magnificent preventer of malaria.
But, Big Pharma will again keep that information to themselves.
That neighborhood has been sprayed 5 times already. Weird, and third-world worrisome for those of us who live close enough to know exactly where the neighborhood is. My morning routine now includes slathering on a layer of Picaridin (lasts up to 14 hours). Repeat at dusk if I need to go outside.
