The good thing is that you pretty much know DeSantis meant to say what he said, and that it was not a gaffe. Everything he says is practiced, polished and focus tested. He’s really good at following directions. When he does, he speaks in that very deliberate, strident way of his. When he’s off script, you can tell. He flounders - like when Charlie Crist asked him if he’d pledge to serve out his full term as governor if he won.

You can’t pardon someone who hasn’t been convicted of a crime.
No one had been convicted till after Trump left the WH.
He couldn't pardon them.
Well, he could have stepped up to the mics and told them to knock it off. Waiting hours to do that came across a petulant.
Was it criminal? I don’t think so. Was it something a normal person would have done? I think so.
