A burglar who can't see something can't steal it either – that is the idea behind a new method of deterring crime by using fog.
As CBS 2's Tara Molina reported Tuesday, the technology behind the fog release is a brand-new way of fighting the mass retail thefts plaguing the city.

Release poison gas and save the taxpayers money. Send the bill for the canisters to the family.

Although it would certainly lead to lawsuits (after all, what right does a merchant have to defend his store), the Israelis have a gun that sprays water mixed with a chemical that smells exactly like, well, Number 2.
A couple of doses of that will get the word out, as their hoes will not want anything to do with their the Jacks.

Once the fog gets thick, pipe in the sound of growling dogs from back of store. I like that!

As long as the surveillance cameras can see infrared or whatever it takes to see through the fog.
We still want to know if he took something, we still want to know if he's faking injury.

Security chimps. No shoplifter can match a chimp.
Train the chimp to bite the crotch. There will be no repeat shoplifters.

Now that you mention it, some guy on YouTube makes short videos of the “Trunk Monkey”, a live monkey security system. They’re quite funny.
Here’s one:

$7K
Seems rather expensive.
$7K could go a long way in re-enforcing the external doors and windows.

Only in America do we conceive of these complicated Rube Goldberg devices to try to solve simple problems.
Just do what the Muslims do. Hack their hands off. Guarantee you'll see a massive decrease in burglaries.

The only thing I see wrong with the idea is that security cameras won’t be able to see thru the fog, either. The perps won’t get ID’d.

Between that and flying lessons, you got to give them some credit for rules.

There have been lawsuits over those sorts of chemical smoke used in film and television production, and so "chemical" might well bring out the allergies complaint, the environmental complaint, and....Theatrical fog juice is composed of glycerine and water. Not harmful in the short or long term, though extremely long-term exposure may cause irritation of mucous membranes. Extended (multi-year) exposure to smoke and fog has been associated with both short-term and long-term respiratory health problems.
Personally, I don't think a thief who has been exposed for 30-60 minutes would have any case, but that wouldn't prevent a lawyer from pursuing a case.
