Oakland police advise residents to reinforce doors as home invasions increase

In a public safety advisory issued Wednesday, the Oakland Police Department recommended residents reinforce their doors and install security cameras amid a spate of home invasion robberies in the East Bay city.

Thieves are ransacking homes, even when residents are present, and the department reported an increase in these break-ins across several neighborhoods, including Laurel, North Hills, Joaquin Miller and the Greater San Antonio area.

“In recent cases, armed individuals forcibly entered the residences by kicking in doors, threatening the victims, and taking the victim’s personal belongings before fleeing the residence,” the department said in a public announcement posted online.

Police offered several tips for residents to reduce their risk of an invasion, including making sure all doors and windows are locked and reinforcing doors with security bars or door braces. They suggested installing security systems with motion detection, surveillance cameras and alarms, as well as outdoor lighting with motion sensors. Another tip included trimming hedges and shrubs around the home to remove places where thieves could hide.

But the statistics tell us everything is great and that concerns about increasing crime are a right-wing conspiracy!

I would advise fire power. The kind that liquidates a threat as it emerges from the dark not hedge work.

Doesn’t the “Castle Doctrine” apply in California?

A shotgun of any gauge or caliber would be more effective.

For those who can’t afford to turn their house into a fortress they could set their valuables on the front lawn.

Only for the home invaders.

Oh, and you can’t hurt any home invader if they manage to bust through the door.

A couple of decades ago, I worked in a major city in California's Great Valley, but I had occasional duties in Oakland.

I became a pro at avoiding traveling to the once-fine Oakland city.

When I could not avoid the trip, I was "Out-of-there" as quickly as anyone could say "meeting's over".

For all of it's faults, I can report that Oakland is an attractive city...

...in one's rear view mirror.

I didn’t read the whole thing but what I did read did not include the suggestion that you arm yourself and shoot the bastards when they come through the door

If I lived in Oakland, I’d take that as strong advice to get outta Dodge.
But then again, maybe I’d stay and open up a reinforced door company.

Put on doors that open out instead of in. Harder to break through. You can buy a steel Security door for about $800.

Remove the door. Put fragmentation explosives inside. Welcome the hood rats with a bang. They will stop quick.

A couple of really big Capacitors.
Two contact strips. Zap

Vacuum room inside first door - bad guy enters, pull vacuum.
Watch the eyeballs come out first . . .

3 Pits - no chains Surprise!

3 like-minded neighbors, machetes, compact excavator.

Most homes you can enter with a utility knife and a hammer. You cut the exterior siding, open it between two studs, and push thru the drywall. Walk right in. They only use plywood sheathing on corners now. Nothing but R-Max foil faced Styrofoam sheathing on exterior walls.
