President Biden is taking flak for sending cluster bombs to Ukraine, and over the weekend he blurted out the truth that both Kyiv and the U.S. are running low on firepower. So why doesn’t the Commander in Chief unveil a new national effort to expand U.S. weapons production and stocks?
“The Ukrainians are running out of ammunition,” Mr. Biden told CNN. “This is a war relating to munitions. And they’re running out of that ammunition, and we’re low on it.” The U.S. has given Kyiv more than two million 155mm artillery rounds, and the Pentagon says Ukraine is burning through 3,000 shells a day.
The U.S. is ramping up to produce more than 20,000 shells a month this year and more in 2024, the U.S. Army says. But America’s adversaries can do the math and understand the U.S. may struggle to support a long war. The Biden crowd has cited limited stocks as a reason to withhold the Army Tactical Missile System, which could help Kyiv strike deep into Russian positions. The Administration is now leaking that it might furnish the missiles as Ukraine’s summer offensive becomes a slog.
Congress’s supplemental cash for Ukraine is helping refill America’s armory, but Mr. Biden has an obligation to make sure the U.S. never goes Winchester, as the saying has it, and not only for Ukraine. The lesson applies to the long-range missiles the U.S. may need if China decides to strike Taiwan.
In a war game for control of the island that the House Select Committee on China played this year, the U.S. ran out of long-range antiship weapons in three days. Retired Navy Rear Admiral Mark Montgomery says in most games the U.S. needs roughly 1,200 long-range antiship missiles, known as LRASMs. But U.S. inventories are in the low hundreds....

Aside from a couple of Patriot batteries the US is mostly sending over old systems that are being phased out. Attack the US directly and see what happens to you.
The official White House stance on running out of munitions: No, we’re not, but yes, we are, so no, we’re not, while yes, we are.
Does anyone remember who the post 9/11 Senator was who gave a press conference and announced that they were tracking Bin Ladin by his use of his cell phone - which caused him to promptly stop so he couldn’t be tracked anymore?
Was it loudmouth Biden?
Anyone who gives away our secrets that are vital to American security needs to be removed from office and banned for a lifetime.
Since we are running out of ammo to give to Ukraine, what’s that say for our ability to defend ourselves against the Chinesze?
MANPADs and other munitions are documented as having been run low as well - and not just stuff that is being phased out.
Well said.
Like Trump said, they gave away 85 *billion* in military hardware to our enemies.
If I ran my household like those in government run the country, I’d be in heavy debt until I dropped dead, everything I had would be repossessed, home foreclosed, and I’d be living under a freeway overpass.
Hmmmm….I don’t see any shortages at Wal-Mart.
With Biden in charge?
Probably nothing.
This is ridiculous. Every estimate I’ve seen takes what they say is Ukraine’s usage rates and compares it to what the US makes. Both the US and Ukraine have made deals with South Korea and a number of foreign ammo makers. We’re in no danger of running out of ammo. Also, Ukraine is fighting very differently than the West does. We fire from very great range and rely mostly on air power. They’re not doing that and thus they are using weapon types that we would barely use in a conflict. This is another disaster porn article.
“Aside from a couple of Patriot batteries the US is mostly sending over old systems that are being phased out. Attack the US directly and see what happens to you.”
Yup.
The article is typical alarmism.
Wish I could go back to 2019 and invest all my money in pharmaceuticals and munitions.
I spent most of my military service in the 90’s under Klinton.
Every single year we had less and less money and ammo to expend for training.
Dims hate a prepared military.
You know, they say the Chinese have a lot of mass manufacturing capability. It might just be a rumor though.
No defense production act, no will to do anything. The left doesn’t want this to escalate (think Vietnam), the right doesn’t want it either. Our military can’t recruit, and they are cutting funds to it.
So do the Russians, ironically!
I think Joe and his team are screwing us
F'n idiots...
