Biden's electric vehicle push is doomed to failure, warn carmakers

Joe Biden’s race to embrace electric vehicles risks overwhelming US charging infrastructure and creating disastrous supply shortages, two of the world’s biggest carmakers have said.

Toyota and Vauxhall owner Stellantis accused the President of being “overly optimistic” in his push for a rule that would require two thirds of new vehicle sales to be electric by 2032.

The companies were quick to point out that they support a move to low-emissions vehicles and electric cars in particular but warned that they need customers to buy them and that costs are still too high for the mass market.

The cars typically cost about £10,000 more than comparable petrol-burning versions, with many drivers able to recoup the difference through cheaper charging over the life of the vehicle.

Toyota warned the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that there would also be a rush to secure lithium and other minerals needed to make battery-powered cars if the plans went ahead.

Toyota said: “The proposed rule underestimates key challenges including the scarcity of minerals to make batteries, the fact that these minerals are not mined or refined in the US, the inadequate infrastructure, and the high cost of [battery electric vehicles].”

Stellantis, which owns Vauchall, Fiat and Chrysler among other brands, said: “The proposed rule significantly underestimates the actions needed to build the targeted EV market…

cba123 just posted an article about Chinese cars that will cost about $4700 US. I think I see where Biden is headed.

It’s amazing watching the big government swamp try to sell this. I love these cars and I have two of them. But I recognize that these vehicles have limitations. And currently, they can’t tax the fuel that these use for several reasons. The biggest reason is it will make the car even more expensive to own and kill the sales.

I have a new one that I drive in Florida. I never have to go to a gas station, and rarely visit a charging station. I get 300 miles on a charge. I now pay zero taxes on gasoline.

When I go to Sams club and see people in line for gas, I’m thankful that I’m not one of them. Every morning my car has 300 miles of range.

So what will they do next? They will start to raise the gasoline tax to make up the difference as gas consumption goes down. This will screw the person who refuses to buy these cars.

And then we can tell them to turn around, go back home and take the bus.

A 'rule' that'll make our streets look like Cuba's.

If these ding dongs have any sense, they would leave the gas tax alone and impose some sort of charge on EVs, maybe a tax on charging them, to help fund the roads.

Or just find some other way to fund roads altogether. Most Western countries just fund the roads from their general budgets; there aren’t dedicated funds like we have here.

Rule #1: The elites want you dead.

Biden’s EV push is just following the elite’s orders.

"...to embrace electric vehicles risks overwhelming US charging infrastructure and creating disastrous supply shortages..."

Wow. How many of us have been saying this for years now?

In that light, it is apparent EVs have nothing to do with "saving the environment" and everything to do with power, control, and money.

Which, in the end, are the same thing to these people.

The scum will figure out a way to put some kind of meter on EV’s to suck mileage tax out of hapless owners.

10,000 pounds is about $12.9k. The electruc recharges would have to have to have been free in order for me to have recouped that on my car with 122k miles on it.

Biden and the rest of them have sold us all out to the Chinese.

It is becoming more and more obvious every day.

A lot of people in resort communities use golf carts for transportation around the community and that’s fine. Some even go for a jaunt to the grocery store outside the community gates.

That’s great and works out for them. In my case I don’t see it as a good option. I live in a small city. There are a few stores nearby but I really only shop at the Home Depot. The other big one is a Target which I don’t patronize for obvious reasons.

Most stores are 5-15 miles away. Non-starter for a golf cart.

There will be a mileage tax on both EV’s and gas-powered cars if these communists have their way.

Isn’t it hugely expensive to replace the battery?

There was a guy in Finland who had to replace the battery in his Tesla. It was going to cost him $25,000.

He set his Tesla on fire and posted the video online. It went viral around the world.
