US to send cluster munitions to Ukraine - reports

The US is planning to send Ukraine a cluster munitions package to help in its counteroffensive against Russia, US media reports.

Ukraine has been asking for the weapons for months amid an ammunition shortage.

Cluster munitions - which are banned by dozens of countries - are a class of weapons that contain multiple explosive bomblets called submunitions.

The Biden administration is expected to announce the package on Friday, the BBC's US partner CBS News reports.

US officials had reportedly been hesitant to supply Ukraine with cluster munitions because of their potential to harm civilians. The US has a stockpile of these cluster bombs, which were first developed during World War II.

The munitions are controversial because of their high failure rates, meaning unexploded bomblets can linger on the ground for long and possibly detonate later on.

Cluster bombs are horrible munitions. I don't understand why they are not banned. For the USA to be supplying these terrible bombs for use in Ukraine is just a dreadful comment on where we are as a nation--Satan has his grip on our nation, and I fear the US headed towards judgement.

Horrible, horrible.

As opposed to, say, hand grenades, 500lb dumb bombs, who simply explode sending hot shards of iron across the landscape at the speed of sound, and arty shells, say 5-6 inches diameter, that vaporize meat in the vicinity upon impact.

Much worse than bullets, which simply blow a head off the shoulders.

Yeah, there are limits to what a civilized society should use during warfare, when the goal is to kill the opposition.

Got to be done in a humane way.

The reason cluster munitions are banned is because unexploded bomblets cover the area and are very difficult to remove. This causes civilian casualties for years and even decades after they were deployed.

We are going to be seeding Ukraine with these bomblets - that's insane.

Cluster munitions are used on enemy territory - you never deploy cluster munitions in your own territory .

But that is exactly what they are planning in Ukraine.

We ARE the new evil empire under Biden. We bombed the Nord steam pipelines. Ukraine, with Biden regime consent, has used civilians as human shields, constantly targeted civilians in Donetsk and shelled a nuclear power plant.

80% of the world knows all that and it harming our status with the rest of the world.

Kind of surprised there have been no high profile terror attacks inside Russia as reprisals for the Ukraine invasion. Would those weaken Putin’s position or harden his resolve to keep invading?

With all the munitions we're supplying to Ukraine, I cannot see how we are not in a war (USA) vs. Russia. With Putin stalled it seems going with nukes is his final option and we, as the largest supplier of munitions are a valid target by sub or otherwise.

Of course as I've noted, all China has to do is float a balloon or two over the US and our military shuts down all our comms and defenses so no intel will be gathered but then we've rendered whatever defenses we had in place to be useless.

Lastly, since no one knows whose running the country and having the messages typed for Biden to try and read, for all we know they want WWW III, complete with nukes, as there are billionaires who think there's easily 6 billion too many people on Mother Gaia.

I'd like to know who the guy was that was cursed by some Chinese guy with the old "May you live in interesting times."

Its his fault. ;-)

Sigh.

“Many countries, including major arms producers like the United States, China, Russia, Ukraine and Israel, have not joined the treaty, which prohibits all use, stockpiling, production and transfer of the weapons.”

“The Defense Department had been due by 2019 to stop use of any cluster munitions with a rate of unexploded ordnance greater than 1%. But the Trump administration rolled back that policy, allowing commanders to approve use of such munitions.”

The Trump administration cancels a plan to curtail the use of cluster bombs
November 30, 2017
“The policy change, which reverses a 2008 decision by the George W. Bush administration”

“The 2008 policy would have banned the use of all cluster munitions that have an unexploded ordnance rate above 1 percent. Going forward, the U.S. military will be allowed to buy cluster bombs that don’t meet that standard, so long as they have “advanced safety features” such as self-destruct mechanisms that would kick in after they are dropped.

The Defense Department will also slow its ongoing program to decommission the current U.S. stockpile of cluster munitions until the current stockpiles can be replenished with newer, safer weapons.”

Russia has been using cluster bombs on civilians since early in the invasion and Ukraine has even used some cluster bombs.

“”””they are banned...internationally. i think we accused someone of using thm in ???? syria???””””

“In January, for example, Human Rights Watch reported that a ballistic missile with a Russian cluster-bomb warhead launched by Syria devastated a school in Idlib Province, killing 12 civilians including five children. In 2017, the Atlantic Council’s policy research center documented use of Russian cluster munitions in the bombing of Aleppo.

Although the United States has not signed the treaty banning cluster munitions, it pledged in 2008 to sharply restrict their use to avoid disproportionate harm to civilians. But that policy changed under the Trump administration in December 2017 when the Pentagon allowed American forces to stockpile the weapons. Many are believed to be stored in South Korea.”
