That has nothing to do with speaking the Truth not being ‘bitter’.

Truth is Truth.

Are you denying that Britain vetoed our (colonial) abolitionist laws?

Yes or no. Pick.

“You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so I could save the lives of many people.”

Are you trying to say that slaves should have understood that their bondage was meant for good? Should Jews who lived through the holocaust understood that it was an impetus for the creation of modern Israel - that Nazism was meant for their good?

If we believe a people enslaved or brutalized by a regime should recognize that "God intended it for their good" - then what we believe is beyond credulity in my opinion.

In 1776 the REAL issue was independence.

Everything else would need to wait.

'...then what we believe is beyond credulity in my opinion.'

This is one of the hardest things in our history. I understand the arguments of the Founders doing their best to create a Union; but if all of the people had truly taken to heart the ideals in our Declaration, the slaves might have foregone hundreds of years of further slavery and failure to achieve true citizenship.

Given frail human nature, I guess it had to happen the way that it did; but we paid a horrible price a hundred years later, and many still didn't learn the lesson for another hundred years. And the stupidity still carries on - we've just been trying, since the Johnson years, to destroy Black people further.

We've made a mess for ourselves. There's no getting around it.

I am a Republican, a black, dyed in the wool Republican,
and I never intend to belong to any other party than
the party of freedom and progress.

How about just including him in regular history lessons through school? Or including him on MLK Day?

As it is now, we are already rubbing raw the past of slavery in Jan, Feb and June, then Native American issues in Oct and Nov. Toss in Kwanzaa and we’ve got Dec too.

Frederick Douglass deserves to be honored. Read his autobiography. Remember that the slave holders were for the most part a small minority of “power elites”. They still try to manipulate people for their personal power and wealth.

“If we believe a people enslaved or brutalized by a regime should recognize that “God intended it for their good” - then what we believe is beyond credulity in my opinion.”

Perhaps beyond credulity; certainly beyond my ability to explain in adequate terms.

But it is there, probably for a reason. One explanation - not a very good one - is that the story was put there for us to ignore.

The Slave Power( not the avarage Southner) argued that Slavery was superior to the Free Market. George Fritzhugh wrote a whole pamphlet on how the Slave System was a form of Socialism. “The CSA Nationalized whole Industries. The Mills and Mines, food and clothing Industries.”

I have in my possession some unused rationing stamps issued to my grandfather in WWII permitting him to buy kerosene for farm use. It is my understanding gasoline, sugar, and tires were rationed as well. Production of consumer goods like refrigerators and automobiles was prohibited by the U.S. government.

The government imposed mandatory wage and price controls. The government placed some Americans in internment camps. All this was during the time Americans were fighting in Europe and Asia.

When I read your statement that the CSA government did similar things, I was not too surprised.

"Is this all you know about the matter?"

It's the elephant in the living room. All other facts are not nearly so dynamic as that some of the 13 colonies were trying to move away from the slave situation and were held back intentionally.

I wish I didn't know a thing about it and could ignore it. It's all in the past. The reality is though progressives make it a big deal, so we can't afford to ignore it. I'm simply leveraging the genius of the Founders and the timeline of abolitionism as they should be leveraged. It doesn't benefit the progressives - and there's no doubt about that. So I'm good with that.

The facts are on our side. Why leave such a useful item unused?
