Titanic sub’s voice recordings, data to be probed as officials mull possible criminality

Officials investigating the doomed Titanic submersible will examine voice recordings and other data from its mothership to try to determine what happened and whether any criminality occurred, according to reports.

Investigators with the Transportation Safety Board of Canada visited the Polar Prince, the OceanGate Titan sub’s lead ship, Saturday “to collect information from the vessel’s voyage data recorder and other vessel systems that contain useful information,” TSB Chairwoman Kathy Fox told CNN.

Fox said agency wants to “find out what happened and why and to find out what needs to change to reduce the chance or the risk of such occurrences in the future,” according to the report.

She said voice recordings “could be useful in our investigation” but insisted that the investigation’s purpose was not to point blame. Meanwhile, authorities are working to determine whether the case warrants a criminal investigation, said Royal Canadian Mounted Police Superintendent Kent Osmond on Saturday.

I think they only had texting, no voice. Even if they were recording voice inside the sub it probably didn’t survive the implosion.

Criminal investigation? Whom are they going to arrest? The guy responsible for all this was in the sub.

Well, they fired their 50-year old White engineer who warned the OceanGate that the sub was not safe:

"The Company Behind the Missing Tourist Sub Fired an Employee After He Expressed Safety Concerns"

The exec in question, David Lochridge, lost his job at the company in January of 2018 after he delivered a 'scathing' report to the company’s senior management that highlighted numerous safety concerns with its underwater vehicle...problems so serious that he felt they could 'pose a safety risk to personnel' and to passengers.

Lochridge worried that small flaws in the hull could hypothetically expand under the pressure of diving into the depths of the ocean. Lochridge suggested that the company conduct 'critical, non-destructive testing of the experimental design of the hull,' but was repeatedly met with protestations from the company’s management.

The viewport at the forward of the submersible was only built to a certified pressure of 1,300 meters, although OceanGate intended to take passengers down to depths of 4,000 meters. Lochridge learned that the viewport manufacturer would only certify to a depth of 1,300 meters due to experimental design of the viewport supplied by OceanGate, which was out of the Pressure Vessels for Human Occupancy (“PVHO”) standards. OceanGate refused to pay for the manufacturer to build a viewport that would meet the required depth of 4,000 meters.

$1.25 million in receipts for the ride. Couldn’t they have attached to the sub a 2 and a half-mile cable to pull it out?

The point is what the mothership recorded.

Gene Kranz was a 38 year old white guy when he brought Apollo 13 home safely.

The event was self curing. No one is going to do this again for a long long time.

Ironically, the Kent Osmond who was Eddie Haskell, did become an LAPD motorcycle officer and was shot (not fatally) in the line of duty.

The snapping of the carbon fiber would have been too loud for voice
