Deeply disturbed by the accounting of American deceit in Vietnam, he approached The New York Times. The disclosures that followed rocked the nation.

Daniel Ellsberg, a military analyst who after experiencing a sobbing antiwar epiphany on a bathroom floor made the momentous decision in 1971 to disclose a secret history of American lies and deceit in Vietnam, what came to be known as the Pentagon Papers, died on Friday at his home in Kensington, Calif. He was 92.

The cause was pancreatic cancer, his wife and children said in a statement.

I attended college in california and met a lot of people from SE Asia. Their summary of "life back home" after the commies took over is sad.

The American GI is all that stood between those people and outer darkness. And when we left, tens of millions died. Even including Laos and Cambodia.

I do think that when the Vietnamese army liberated Cambodia from Pol Pot, they began to understand how wrong the doctrine was, and within a few years pretty much abandoned hard-core Marxist-Leninism. Yes Vietnam is still autocratic, but really it’s not much different than say, Singapore.

Yep. The VC was almost totally destroyed during the Tet Offensive. But TV showed the embassy almost being overrun, and all the casualties in Hue. The propaganda war was lost.
