Deeply disturbed by the accounting of American deceit in Vietnam, he approached The New York Times. The disclosures that followed rocked the nation.
Daniel Ellsberg, a military analyst who after experiencing a sobbing antiwar epiphany on a bathroom floor made the momentous decision in 1971 to disclose a secret history of American lies and deceit in Vietnam, what came to be known as the Pentagon Papers, died on Friday at his home in Kensington, Calif. He was 92.
The cause was pancreatic cancer, his wife and children said in a statement.

Anthony J. Russo Jr., left, and Mr. Ellsberg outside the federal court in Los Angeles in 1973 after Judge William M. Byrne Jr. dismissed all the charges against them. Mr. Ellsberg’s wife, Patricia, was at right.
He was a Democrat POS.
but he lived to 92, Y’all know the good they die young.
He had his run in life. No great loss.
I’d think he will arrive to where he deserves.
The Vietnam War. A war America lost at home and abroad.
RIP
That second picture looks like a cross between Gary Hart ad Joe Biden.
God gives some people some extra time to come around.
The growing dishonesty of the upper military levels came to a head. The JCS were simply lying about the progress of the war. After WW2 the American public had a lot of trust in the military. The revelation of those lies are a devastating disaster for the good name of the Army. Americans felt very betrayed. The Pentagon wasn’t lying for operational security. After all Ho Chi Minh knew that we weren’t winning. The Pentagon lies were only to cover up the crashing incompetence of Generals who were way over their heads and incapable of dealing with an insurgency. Fools were using tactics designed to fight the Imperial Japanese Army or the Wehrmacht. Not the NVA.
Ellsworth did us a favor.
If I may add a revision to that:
The Vietnam War. A war America lost abroad because of what occurred at home.
As soon as Westmoreland proposed dropping a nuke on our marines at Khe San and killing alot of our own guys to get 40,000 NVA, we should have bugged out of that sh*thole.
Was he disclosing classified information that endangered military personnel?
Was he prosecuted under the espionage act?
How much prison time did Ellsberg serve?
I don’t know the answers, it was before my time, so I’m asking questions about liberal hero Ellsberg
And decades later we now know those in government are lying about everything...
The Vietnam War was not the first war brought to us courtesy of the lies and manipulations of the media. That was the Spanish American War.
But the Vietnam war was the first war America could see playing out on our TV sets each night. And It was the media that obediently broadcasted the lies they were told to report by McNamara and others.
And then he gives then pancreatic cancer? Not a nice way to go.
Interesting write up here.
He wanted to be a “labor organizer” (eg community organizer) and takes credit for being the one to oust Nixon…
But he did it all for the good of the nation and not because he was a communist…
He looked the part: a rat.
I think what he released was information we needed to know.
We were being lied to, our troops were having their hands tied, and there was no intention of winning.
If it can be destroyed by the truth then we are better off having it destroyed.
Why is anyone upset that someone let the public know what a DEMOCRAT administration was doing?
“Why is anyone upset that someone let the public know what a DEMOCRAT administration was doing?”
Nixon was president in 1971. It was done to slam him, not the Democrats.
You forgot
Did he cause the deaths of thousands of ARVN troops after we left, and the deaths of millions under Pol Pot?
Little things that some of us remember.
