The cause of global warming is showing no signs of slowing as heat-trapping carbon dioxide in Earth’s atmosphere increased to record highs in its annual Spring peak, jumping at one of the fastest rates on record, officials announced Monday.

Carbon dioxide levels in the air are now the highest they’ve been in more than 4 million years because of the burning of oil coal and gas. The last time the air had similar amounts was during a less hospitable hothouse Earth before human civilization took root, scientists said.

“To me as an atmospheric scientist, that trend is very concerning,” said NOAA greenhouse gas monitoring group leader Arlyn Andrews. “Not only is CO2 continuing to increase despite efforts to start reducing emissions, but it’s increasing faster than it was 10 or 20 years ago.”

Because of that “we are still dealing with CO2 in the atmosphere that was emitted in the early-to-mid 20th century,” University of Oklahoma meteorology professor Jason Furtado.

“We are absolutely at levels unseen in human civilization,” Furtado said. “Humans are running a massive experiment on the Earth climate system via burning carbon, and the results are turning out not great for a lot of people on this planet.”

What is the current amount of CO2 in our atmosphere according to environmental groups?

Can we agree it's at about 380-400 ppm, (parts per million)? Now let's examine the total make-up of the atmosphere:

Earth's atmosphere is made-up of:

78% Nitrogen

21% Oxygen

1% trace gasses including methane and greenhouse gasses, most of which is water vapor, (which includes CO2)

So, 400 ppm of CO2 is part of that 1%, or 0.04% (4/100) of ONE percent of the atmosphere.

This minute amount is in no way a pollutant and propagating it as such isn't science, it's science fiction!

Ok lets sort this out.

1) Is the amount of CO2 going up to record highs? Yep, the very tiny portion of the atmosphere that is CO2 is increasing.

2) Does more CO2 mean more warming? There is a direct effect of CO2 in trapping heat radiation from escaping back to space. It is in a very narrow band that is already pretty much all trapped by water vapor though so the effect is very tiny. So in theory there is some warming effect but with all the other stuff going on its not significant.

3) Has the Earth been warming in an alarming way during time CO2 has been increasing? No. Temp records have been adjusted to make it look like there is a correlation, but they are BS adjustments. In the raw data there is no warming.
