Donald Trump Finally Shares How He Feels About the Debt Ceiling Deal
TownHall ^ | May 31, 2023 11:45 PM | Matt Vespa

The deal to raise the debt ceiling for two years to the tune of $4 trillion while minimally cutting spending passed the House, thanks to the Democratic Party support. More Democrats voted for the compromise than Republicans did, which we all saw coming, given the vocal opposition from the party's conservative wing. Even more damning were the allegations that the $4 trillion increase wasn’t a Democratic Party pitch but Speaker Kevin McCarthy's (R-CA) proposal. Yet, even on the Republican side of the aisle, you had staunch conservatives disagreeing.

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), one of the most prominent spending hawks, voiced his approval of the legislation, whereas Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) vehemently opposed it. Massie’s stamp of approval was key as it assured passage through the House Rules Committee, which enabled the process of bringing this bill up for a floor vote.

House okays debt ceiling bill 314-117

149 Republicans voted yea
165 Democrats voted yea.

So there were more Democratic yeas even though they are in the minority— Chad Pergram (@ChadPergram) June 1, 2023

B) 149 GOPers voted yea
165 Dems voted yea

71 GOPers voted no
46 Dems voted no

2 Dems missed the vote
2 GOPers missed the vote— Chad Pergram (@ChadPergram) June 1, 2023

As Spencer wrote, at 314-117, the deal passed. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) voiced his support for the bill. Still, the fact it was passed without majority Republican Party support guarantees a motion to vacate could be considered by House conservatives. If successful, it could take the gavel away from Mr. McCarthy.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries says he will support debt ceiling bill "without hesitation, reservation or trepidation."

"Not because it's perfect. But in divided government, we, of course, cannot allow the perfect to be the enemy of the good." https://t.co/ODQ1safMcq pic.twitter.com/d1VEC9zZd2— ABC News Politics (@ABCPolitics) May 31, 2023

Well, have no fear, establishment media, Trump has spoken about the deal, and he's not too pleased with it (via WaPo) [emphasis mine]:

Most Republican presidential candidates are panning the deal negotiated by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) to suspend the debt ceiling, including the GOP front-runner, former president Donald Trump, who said he would have allowed the country to default.

“Well, it is what it is, it was going to pass,” Trump told Des Moines 1040 WHO radio host Simon Conway, adding that “we’ll get it fixed and will get it fixed properly in two years.” Asked about his recent CNN town hall comments about letting a default happen, he said, “I would have done that.”

[…]

During the CNN town hall event earlier this month, Trump argued that Republicans should use the deal ceiling as leverage to roll back many of Biden’s spending priorities.

“If they don’t, … you’ll have to default,” Trump said. He suggested the consequences of a default could lead to “a bad week or a bad day.”

During Trump’s presidency, the debt ceiling was raised three times by Congress without any preconditions.

[…]

Until Wednesday, Trump had been publicly silent since the contours of the deal became public Saturday — and had drawn criticism from some GOP presidential rivals for that.

Look, it’s not the best bill by any stretch. We’re also not out of the woods here since it heads to the Democratic-controlled Senate, where progressives aren’t happy with the legislation. Then again, will they torpedo the whole package and deny Joe Biden a legislative win? This isn’t over yet.

“Compare his response to the budget deal and Kevin McCarthy versus Kayleigh McEnany one of his best supporters ??”

Seems inconsistent, I’ll grant.

Trump was smart to not criticize a deal that adds at least 4 trillion to the deficit, got it.

Are you saying it’s smart to not take a stand on deals you can’t win versus standing on a principal you supposedly support.

I was a strong supporter of Trump even before 2016. I made a special trip to his Taj Mahol back around 1990 and was super impressed with the operation, and accomplishment. I followed him for years, and became a proponent of his political possibilities when he started attacking Obama over his birth certificate. So I have a very good grasp of the memory hole.

Trump was a very good President, in 2017 and 2018, when he had both houses of Congress. THEY accomplished a lot, together. No one person can drive what goes on in Washington, I don’t care who they are. And any Republican President would have done at least pretty good, following Obama. So I give him credit. Just not full credit.

But in 2020 the wheels came completely off. And rather than ever admit a single misstep, all he ever does is double down, and point fingers. He literally acts like a two year old when he doesn’t get his way, as do a large swath of his supporters.

The time for childish games are over. Especially for someone so old, and shot up with so many of his vaccines and boosters he might not even make it to the end of the next term. A lot has changed since 2017 and 2018, and for Trump, none of it has been good. He’s on the way down, not up. So I salute him for the good he did, and actively look for his replacement. That makes me an enemy of his supporters, apparently. So be it.

Thank you for posting Revolutionary.

"Trump would not let this happen unless it was part of the plan."

Regarding the results of debt ceiling politics, Trump is hopefully still adding names to his list of “enemies of the constitutional republic.”

Also, I am still of the opinion that regular readers of Free Republican can probably pick better candidates to elect to state and federal offices than Trump does, Trump arguably not getting good advice from institutionally indoctrinated advisors.

Trump can endorse candidates from lists that Constitution-savvy partiots recommend as long as candidates are not incumbents, candidates also promising to repeal the 16th (direct taxes) and 17th (popular voting for federal senators) Amendments after they win office.

After all, incumbents have once again shown that that do not have the patriotism and leadership skills necessary to find legislative support for effective remedies for unconstitutional government policies.

Huh? If you don't even know the difference between the deficit and the Federal debt, I'm not sure what kind of credibility you think you have anyway.

If you don’t think 4 trillion doesn’t add to the Federal Debt, then you have no idea what you’re talking about.

Every dollar the government has to borrow adds to the Federal Deficit, obviously you failed Economics 101.

Of course it does. What does that have to do with the "deficit?"

Every dollar the government has to borrow adds to the Federal Deficit, obviously you failed Economics 101.

I don't think you have any idea what you're talking about. This deal did nothing except raise the debt limit. The money has already been "spent." Congress already authorized the massive expenditure of money in the current fiscal year when it passed its FY2023 spending bills last year.

Of course, the same could be said about the Trump Sycophants, in the not too distant past when Trump was indicted in NY, nearly every Trump supporter on FR was demanding that DeSantis speak up and defend Trump as if it was his obligation to defend Trump.

In the last few days, Trump trashed Kayleigh McEnany one of his best appointments, like clockwork the Trump sycophants came out of the woodwork to trash her as well.

Trump demands loyalty from the people who work for him, but doesn’t give loyalty to anyone else.

I guess you missed where Kayleigh and Hannity were texting each other, in Jan 2021 to put a stop to “stolen election” talk.

Kayleigh, who evidentially, has missed the latest polls….where your Dee/DehSainctus is falling like a rock….even AFTER his FTL, which, typically, gives candidates at least a bit of a bump.

Do you think the 2020 was stolen or won by DeeDeepStateBiden?

Hmmm?

Kind of a weasel move on your part when you didn’t comment when he told the republicans not to make the deal BEFORE the deal was made.

Did the Republicans get any meaningful cuts in spending ??

The budget is in structural deficit, meaning it’s not balanced and is in deficit, which will add to the debt and was passed that way, under democrats and republicans.

Even a moron would know if the budget was in balance there would be no need to increase the debt limit, since the budget is not in balance, the debt limit had to be increased, this deal did nothing to bring the budget into balance.

Please be serious, this is a meaningless debate when the fact are so clearly misunderstood by you.

It’s a bigger weasel move by Trump who handpicked McCarthy who negotiated the deal, whatever happened to his “art of the deal” negotiating skills.

A “cut” is a decrease in the rate of increase in spending.

The U.S. budget hasn't been in balance in my lifetime. I don't know why you're so focused on what has transpired in the last few days. These battles were lost decades ago.

And it's only going to get worse, as the U.S. is now mired in a spiraling combination of an aging population, declining productivity, and social dysfunction that will make it impossible to "fix" the problem.
