Why debate in primaries when you’ve already fixed the votes to win.
What other contenders? Traditionally the incumbent runs unopposed in the primary phase. And the DNC is really good at riding their members to make sure that tradition is upheld. So there won’t be opponents to debate with. Thus no debates.
