Last night I participated in a conversation. This article is written as an outcome of that conversation, as requested by those who participated. Essentially, the framework of the conversation, as I initially listened, is best described as a series of questions amid a group of smart intellectual types who are very understanding of the nature of our current situation.
In various forms they were asking each other the same question. What happened in the last several years that caused Democrats, leftists and the traditional political left to switch positions on their advocacy?
Liberalism literally went from railing against Big Govt, to embracing corrupt Big Govt. Why and how did this happen?
In short, it was the same line of questioning I have seen asked by Tucker Carlson, Glenn Greenwald, Tulsi Gabbard and various traditionally liberal people as well as people on the right side of the continuum.
Why and how did traditional liberalism so suddenly flip from being, big picture – ‘anti-government’, to suddenly embracing corrupt government enterprise, and supporting the intelligence apparatus, federal govt (writ large), institutional oppressive law enforcement and FBI etc.? What happened?
After listening to this conversation quietly, as I am prone to do, my remarks -with citations and examples- silenced the room.
At the conclusion of my remarks, everyone asked me if I had ever written about this, and if not – why not? I did not have an answer, so consider this a promise fulfilled. Perhaps you might find value.
In the 50 years that preceded 2008, traditional leftists, media activists, left-wing community organizing agencies, Democrats, liberals, progressives, or whatever label you want to assign, essentially railed against the U.S. government and all that it represented. I agree that the final socialist push was Jan 2009 but, IMHO, the beginning of socialism in this country began in 1965 by a guy named Lyndon Johnson. He started the decay with the youth, the decline of education systems, the complicit media, the people who don’t want to work for a living. He was the father of modern American welfare.

Go back a bit further, to FDR’s creation of dozens of federal regulatory entities. THAT is closer to the beginning, though some might argue that the imposition of Income Tax, or the direct election of senators could be construed as a starting point.

That’s the turning point, where democrats decided that they could not let the American citizens decide who gets elected. Democrats gave up on trusting the American people to make the right (or is it the left) decisions.
With them deciding that the American people would not elect democrats because democrats could not win by making the case for getting elected, democras undertook the desision to...
rig as many elections as possible from then on, and in fact, their decision has been paying off...
as witnessed by the 2022 midterm elections and the 2020 presidential election, and no doubt, all elections in the future.
Democrats could not afford another shellacking unless they wanted to let the people make them irrelevant. The only thing democrats needed to do after their decision to rig all elections, was to get the media on their side to help deny any impropriety in who voted and who counted the votes.
Thus, we ended up with Biden and democrat control of congress, and the republicans ended up lucky to win the house by a handful of members.
It will happen again, and forever, unless they are stopped.
It started in the late 60’s after Bill Ayers and the Weather Underground et al realized they couldn’t take down capitalism thru violence. So they put on jackets and ties and went in to the universities and high schools and started indoctrinating young skulls full of mush. Barack Obama held his first political fund raiser in Bill Ayer’s home. Fifty years later they are seeing the the results. It is going to get worse if or when it gets better.
Oh dear me. You did not think they were against Big Government did you? PLEASE do not tell me you were that dim.
Even the guys back in the sixties who did the cartoon where two hippies were talking to each other about how they were going to collect their government benefits and then go protest the fascist state understood what was going on.
They love Big Government, Big Police, Big Business as long as they are in charge and can use them to hurt other people.
I pondered that last sentence for a bit, I considered using "control" and "enslave" but realize that neither of those cover what they actually want. They want to hurt and damage you. For the crime of being happy.
Liberals are miserable people. And they really hate happy people. Wicked, mean, happy people. They hates them they do.
Because they can never be happy. Because being happy means doing something meaningful. Something that brings joy to others and they can't do that.
And no it was not in 2009. The major change came in 1992. But the biggest change was in 1912. When America decided that a guy who had never held a job in his life was a good choice to run the country. And then we did it again. And again.
Stop electing people who have never made anything in their entire worthless life to run the country.
