Russian Officials Unnerved by Ukraine Bloodshed Are Contacting CIA, Agency Says
WSJ ^

Posted on 05/17/2023 7:05:13 AM PDT by Brilliant

The Central Intelligence Agency’s semipublic campaign to convince Russians disaffected by the war in Ukraine to spy for Washington has borne fruit, CIA officials said this week, as the spy agency released a new video aimed directly at Russian government officials.

Since last fall, the CIA and Federal Bureau of Investigation have used social-media platforms and public appearances to encourage Russians angered by President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine to contact them—and have provided what they say are secure Internet channels to do so.

Some Russians have responded, an official involved in the outreach effort said Tuesday. “It is resulting in contact,” the official said.

The official declined to provide details of how many would-be Russian agents have contacted the CIA or what information they were in a position to provide, citing operational secrecy.

Current and former U.S. officials say that despite Mr. Putin’s apparent unchallenged control over Russian society and political life, Russia has emerged as a potentially rich recruiting environment for government officials and others unnerved by the mounting costs of the Ukraine invasion. An estimated 500,000 or more Russians have fled abroad, where they are easier for U.S. spy agencies to contact...

This was predictable, and I'm glad there is still someone at the CIA who does more than just try to undermine US elections and was smart enough to do what they had to do to exploit this situation, but I am also wondering why I am reading about this in the newspaper. I suppose that if the CIA is posting a video on it, then it's not a big secret, but still, you don't need to talk publicly about how successful it's been. Maybe they think that talking about it will put additional pressure on Putin. Or maybe they think that talking about it will attract more disaffected Russians who are willing to help. I hope it's not just another example of government incompetence.

Oh great. Now the Russians are going to sweep up a lot more people now that they’ve been alerted by a treasonous CIA blabbermouth. Utter incompetence.

Not only does this make sense, I believe we should be doing it even when there is not a war, and these kind of efforts should be directed at China.

Oh, I’m sure the CIA is telling the Wall Street Journal the truth. Yep, for sure...

So... here is the deal... The US Government is so corrupt that we can’t trust anything anyone says... we have to take even the most obvious information and verify it and that takes a long time... why because our intelligence agencies are political actors now... and they killed the one thing that gives the Government credibility... free and fair elections... we don’t have them. Our elections are rigged and therefor you can’t believe anything coming out of the Government... The DOJ FBI and I have to assume the CIA are all working to control the American People instead of serving us. We are being lead by the most evil and incompetent people on earth.

STOP RIGGING ELECTIONS.

And the American people will fix it... you might not like it... but that is the price of living in a free republic.

Amazing isn’t it? The heads of what appears to me to be the entire government and their agencies are incompetent narcissists. Just like the Darwin Award winners who step off the edge of a cliff taking a selfie! Look at meeeeeee.

The most logical possible explanations for this being made so public are that 1) The effort to recruit disaffected Russians failed, so they’re going to plan B which is to make a lot of noise about how successful it allegedly was as a disinformation tactic, or 2) the disinfo campaign was the primary objective in the first place.

And how many of the purportedly “interested” Russian officials are actually what are known in the spy game as “dangles” (fake defectors/double agents whose true purpose is to feed disinformation to the recruiting agency)?

If I were the KGB (or whatever it is called now) I would welcome the FBI/CIA efforts to infiltrate Russian military and intelligence operations as it opens the door wide for me to do the same to them. And I’ll bet I will have more success than them!!

I don’t have much confidence in the CI A anymore. We will most likely be infiltrated and mislead more then we will harm Russia. You can tell this story is bullshit because it’s in the WSJ. A real covert operation wouldn’t be in the media. We are in real trouble if this is the best our side can come up with.

This presupposes that the intelligence agency, which is a proven corrupt political hatchet job, would do anything competent.

The CIA's propaganda is predictable and almost always wrong.

Russian Kinzhal Missile Strikes US Patriot System in Kiev + the Fundamental Disadvantage West Faces

Update on the conflict in Ukraine for May 17, 2023:

- Russia’s Ministry of Defense and US officials confirm Russian hypersonic Kinzhal missiles successfully targeted US-made Patriot air defense systems;

- Patriot systems launched approximately 30 missiles over 2 minutes, representing tens of millions of dollars of missiles that were already in short supply;

- Despite this, the Western media continues repeating obvious fabrications about Ukraine intercepting “all” incoming missiles and drones. The Patriot system falling victim to a Kinzhal missile despite firing upward to 30 missiles calls into question Ukraine’s previous claims of intercepting a Kinzhal days earlier;

- As Ukraine burns through Western weapons and ammunition, the West continues preparing to transfer other weapon systems including warplanes;

- European nations are preparing a “coalition” to purchase and provide F-16 fighters to Ukraine;

- F-16 warplanes have no specific capability beyond the aircraft that made up Ukraine’s original air force which is now mostly destroyed;

I don’t believe the CIA would publicly admit to such a program because it would just tip the Russians off. This was put out to instigate paranoia among the Russian elite. Putin has an 80% approval rating among the public, he’s not leaving unless he dies of natural causes. The US must be desperate to have to resort to so much propaganda.

I don't trust the CIA, why did they? The CIA would happily trade all their names and Ids to the FSB for the right concessions or information that they want.
