I hope they turn Japan around, because staying in America’s shadow might not last much longer with Biden.

Japan has technology. Japan has manufacturing. Japan has money. What Japan doesn’t have are bodies to go in the uniforms.

A sufficient military for the country would require mercenaries. It wouldn’t be the first time someone hired non-citizens to defend the homeland, but it would take a shift in philosophy in Japan greater than the shift from pacifists to self-defenders.

Trump warned the world that each nation by right should and ought to see to its own best interests. Biden has started the clock ticking. Japan has taken the hint.

Language would be a considerable barrier. But Japan’s military strikes me as highly professional and not given to trendy fads. It would be interesting how such additional troops would be integrated.

Japan has been a pacifist nation for many years out of imposed necessity but given their technical expertise...I would caution any nation that might piss them off on purpose. That feudalistic bent turned outward is not far below the surface so one word from their emperor and this train could easily start again. The U.S. had luck on our side in WWll. The Japanese are fierce warriors by nature and astute students of their enemies. Just FYI.

I have seen this movie.

Their giant death robots will be piloted by cute young girls in mini-skirts.

Japan recruited millions of Chinese and Taiwanese and Koreans and Vietnamese and even Mongolians during and before WW2. This is not a new concept in Japan.

Almost all of these served in second line, service and security roles.
