A viral video of a mama bear trying to get her four energetic little cubs across a busy street brought a knowing smile to my face. It was delightfully relatable to watch her pick up her cubs one-by-one and carry them across the road—only to have the cubs wander back to the other side. After many seemingly frustrating attempts, the mama bear finally corralled all four of her cubs, and they made it safely across the road.

The tireless work of parenting symbolized in the video matches imagery used by Paul to describe his care for the people in the church of Thessalonica. Instead of emphasizing his authority, the apostle compared his work among them to a mother and father caring for young children (1 Thessalonians 2:7, 11). It was deep love for the Thessalonians (v. 8) that motivated Paul’s ongoing efforts to encourage, comfort, and urge them “to live lives worthy of God” (v. 12). This impassioned call to godly living was borne out of his loving desire to see them honor God in all areas of their lives.

Paul’s example can serve as a guide for us in all our leadership opportunities—especially when the responsibilities make us weary. Empowered by God’s Spirit, we can gently and persistently love those under our care as we encourage and guide them toward Jesus.>

I hope you’ve had some chill time today.

The lake ice is GONE!! It started disappearing Thursday and today, the last of it went POOF. Only a couple of small piles of snow left where huge mountains of it used to be. The sunshine and wind did their jobs.

I hope your snow piles have disappeared as well.

A blessed Sixth Sunday of Easter (Western)/Sunday of the Samaritan Woman (Orthodox) to all.

Saint Photine, the Samaritan Woman is a wonderful fit for Mothers' Day.

Saint Photini lived in 1st century Palestine and was the woman that Christ met at Jacob's Well in Samaria as recorded in the Gospel according to John (4:4-26). After her encounter with Christ, she and her whole family were baptized by the Apostles and became evangelists of the early Church. Photini and her children eventually were summoned before the emperor Nero and instructed to renounce their faith in Christ. They refused to do so, accepting rather to suffer various tortures. After many efforts to force her to surrender to idolatry, the emperor ordered that she be thrown down a well. Photini gave up her life in the year 66.

Saint Photine is Commemorated on February 26.

On this day we commemorate the holy martyr Photini the Samaritan woman with whom Christ spoke at the well, and those with her.

On this day St. Photo, her sister, died by the sword.

On this day St. Photis, another of her sisters, died when she was tied to two trees and split in two.

On this day St. Paraskeve, another of her sisters, died by the sword.

On this day St. Kyriaki, another of her sisters, died by the sword.

On this day the holy martyr Joses, son of St. Photini, died by the sword.

On this day St. Photinos, another of her sons, died by the sword.
