Arizona Revokes ‘Unconscionable’ Permits for Saudi Firm to Drill Deep-Water Wells

Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes has announced the revocation of drilling permits for new deep-water wells on land leased to a Saudi-owned company, saying that their approval eight months ago was “unconscionable” because the state is on the verge of a water crisis.

Fondomonte, which is owned by a major dairy company in Saudi Arabia, has been growing water-intensive alfalfa in Arizona for export in order to feed cows in the Middle East. It’s illegal to grow the crop in Saudi Arabia because it takes up too much water.

But anyone who buys or leases land in Arizona can, after putting in a well, pump unlimited amounts of water because there are no regulations limiting how much water can be extracted. That’s despite the fact that Arizona is facing cuts to its surface water supply from the Colorado River system, which is critically low.

Eight months ago, the Arizona State Land Department (ASLD) approved two applications for new deep-water wells on the Butler Valley state trust land in La Paz County, some of which is leased to Fondomonte.

The newly-elected Mayes, who made canceling the leases part of her recent election campaign, said that the two leases to Fondomonte have been canceled.

The area of AZ I’m in does not get their water from the river and we have enough water for the next 100 years even factoring in growth.

Which has nothing to do with anything.

You do realize the Saudi firm started leasing this land in 2014 right?

This has NOTHING to do with the election, and EVERYTHING to do with the fact that we don’t charge enough for water in AZ. Period. There’s dozens of these little mini-scandals. Because companies see cheap water and go here. They assume we’re smart enough to charge based on the supply. We aren’t. Been that was for decades.

So why didn’t they simply charge the Saudis 10x more?

Because every single layer of the AZ government, regardless of party or location, are IDIOTS. Not only did they not charge the Saudis 10x as much, they gave them a DISCOUNT. They got the land for 1/6 market value.

“revocation of drilling permits for new deep-water wells on land leased to a Saudi-owned company”

So here again. The government’s main job is protection of the Republic and it’s people and they are failing miserably even though taxpayers are shelling out trillions to it.

They SHOULD charge 10x as much for water, because we simply don’t have that much water and scarce supplies should cost more. And they don’t because they’re idiots. Also they can do things like declare Nestle moving a factory here a win (”more jobs”) while completely ignoring WHY Nestle put a factory here, and what that’s doing to our ability to survive.

Really, none of this should come as a surprise to you. You’re a conservative, you should be well versed in the idea of government misfeasance and malfeasance. 99% of what wrong with this country is either dumb government officials or corrupt government officials. This one is probably the former. Unless they got paid off.

You keep saying we. Again, where I am in AZ we're told we have 100 years of water, even factoring in growth.

And it seems odd, according to you they could charge 10x more but won't because their stupid. I'd guess their a bit more to it.

Great, you’re in the one corner of AZ that has water. You do understand that can change VERY quickly. What happens when Phoenix runs dry? And they know your area has water. Think.

Not could. MUST. Once again you’re proving you didn’t read what I wrote.
Tucson pays 1/3 as much for water as Detroit.

Reread that.

And the Phoenix situation isn’t any better. Or small towns in the desert half of the state.

AZ does NOT charge enough for water. Period. And arguing that your corner is fine doesn’t change the FACT that we’re charging LESS than a place border by TWO great lakes. TWO.

We’re not charging enough. And if you can’t see that it’s because you’ve put your hands over your eyes.

Because the complaints finally got loud enough for them to start paying attention. Also the AG campaigned on trying to shutdown some of this idiocy down.

I just find if difficult to believe they could charge 10x more, but won’t. In this era of greed/inflated prices, it’s just hard to believe.

So the only reason left would be they want to attract out of state business, and simply don’t give a damn if the new businesses and or those who live here run out of water. lol..

You’ve forgotten how government works. Remember it wouldn’t be just charging the Saudi firm. Or Nestle. It’s everybody. So what’s going to happen to elected officials that say the water prices need to increase by 10x? Same thing that happens to elected officials who threaten to cut SocSec benefits. Increasing utility costs is a 3rd rail in politics. And since when it comes to water the government IS the utility...

This is really the problem with having government in charge of stuff. If some company had bought all the water supply, and was looking at the water tables in AZ they’d damn sure be pricing in relation to supply. It would work like every other shortage in supply, prices go up as supplies go down. But we don’t have a company in charge. We have elected officials. Who want to stay elected officials, and don’t care if the government makes money, or charges something sensible. They just want to not get voted out. So they aren’t increasing the price on water.

Should be close to an even trade. Exporting hay to Asia is big business here in eastern Washington. A ton of quality non-export hay is $375 locally and over $500 if shipped to western Washington.

Once you figure fumigating, container rental, trucking to the port, and shipping cost its probably over $1,000 on delivery.

Yeah. Tucson averages 8 CCF a month usage and pays $41. Detroit average 6 CCF and pays $81.
