Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes has announced the revocation of drilling permits for new deep-water wells on land leased to a Saudi-owned company, saying that their approval eight months ago was “unconscionable” because the state is on the verge of a water crisis.
Fondomonte, which is owned by a major dairy company in Saudi Arabia, has been growing water-intensive alfalfa in Arizona for export in order to feed cows in the Middle East. It’s illegal to grow the crop in Saudi Arabia because it takes up too much water.
But anyone who buys or leases land in Arizona can, after putting in a well, pump unlimited amounts of water because there are no regulations limiting how much water can be extracted. That’s despite the fact that Arizona is facing cuts to its surface water supply from the Colorado River system, which is critically low.
Eight months ago, the Arizona State Land Department (ASLD) approved two applications for new deep-water wells on the Butler Valley state trust land in La Paz County, some of which is leased to Fondomonte.
The newly-elected Mayes, who made canceling the leases part of her recent election campaign, said that the two leases to Fondomonte have been canceled.

Use American water to grow Mooselimb crops? Negative.
She is a Dem. Her Republican predecessor quiverd. Who leased the land? I believe a Republican.
THERE is a breath of fresh air......
I remember when the bussing of school kids ran white out of the San Fernando Valley into Palmdale/Lancaster area.
The developers couldn’t build houses fast enough. The county couldn’t build water mains fast enough. The developers dug DEEP wells, but made sure they could be connected when the water systems caught up.
ALL the ALFALFA FARMERS west of there growing alfalfa lost their water supply & couldn’t afford to dig new DEEP wells.
Grow water intensive crops in a land locked desert... What could go wrong?
I don’t think Alfalfa was able to catch Darla with his crooning.
Alfalfa for oil seems like a pretty good trade.
Glad it is cancelled regardless of WHO does it. In essence, Arizona is exporting water to Saudi Arabia, China and Europe, packaged in hay and nuts. 70% of all water in Arizona is used for agriculture - and a lot of that now is shipped to Saudi, China and Europe.
No thank you. We need to keep the water here. There are places not far from me where the roads are cracking because too much water has been pumped out AND where they are EXPANDING nut farms - owned by foreigners! A single small nut farm can use as much water as 20,000 people. It is NUTS!
whilst I agree with her decision, I challenge the fact that she was actually legitimately elected
Stolen elections have serious consequences.
Meaning this should have never been considered in the first place.
Let them go to someplace like Australia. Water in the West as precious as earl.
and they should say the same to us about the oil we are taking from them? Water is precious in the west, but still not as precious as oil.
Trump got us oil independence. Stole elections have consequences.
We aren’t taking anything. We pay a pretty penny and any chance they get, they would raise the price. They know they only have a few more decades.
Since 1985, teh US has never imported less than 100,000 barrels of oil, a day, from Saudi Arabia. Oil independence is awesome, but it is not the same thing as not importing oil, which we did throughout Trump’s term.
It’s got nothing to do with the election. AZ just doesn’t charge enough for water. Tons of water intensive businesses come here. Because water here is 1/3 of what it is in Michigan. Think about that for a second. Businesses don’t care if AZ can’t spare the water, they only care about the cost. AZ needs to add a zero to our water rates. We’re in the freaking desert, act like it.
With plenty of rainfall We grow alfalfa in Tennessee...
Well, we used to til Californians decided to convert our farmland into mcmansions on a postage plot of land.
