Paris (AFP) – French President Emmanuel Macron said in an interview published Sunday that Europe must not be a "follower" of either the US or China on Taiwan, saying that the bloc risks entanglement in "crises that aren't ours".
His comments risk riling Washington and highlight divisions in the European Union over how to approach China, as the US steps up confrontation with its closest rival and Beijing draws closer to Russia in the wake of its invasion of Ukraine.
"The worst thing would be to think that we Europeans must be followers and adapt ourselves to the American rhythm and a Chinese overreaction," Macron told media including French business daily Les Echos and Politico as he returned Friday from a three-day state visit to Beijing.
Citing his prized ideal of EU "strategic autonomy", the French leader said that "we must be clear where our views overlap with the US, but whether it's about Ukraine, relations to China or sanctions, we have a European strategy."
"We don't want to get into a bloc versus bloc logic," he added, saying Europe "should not be caught up in a disordering of the world and crises that aren't ours".

I wish the French had that attitude about Indochina after WWII, would have saved us a lot of grief.
Macron now anti-Biden. LOL
LOL France may lead, but I doubt any will follow. Certainly not the Eastern Europeans, nor the Scandinavians now that Finland has joined NATO. This is mainly Macron pandering to French anti-Americanism like De Gaulle because his popularity right now hovering around Black Death levels.
How about we stay out of all of it.
“Ask him about the cemeteries, Dean”
Ruth Vader Ginsberg approved this message.
Then they lit her on fire in hell.
He needs to mind his own euro ass in europe
hat tip
US should have taken the same stance about Ukraine.
Neocon must have war freepers just have to have an existential threat
Meanwhile their own govt they blindly follow is precisely just that
Oblivious to them
Must be comforting to be so fixated on external bad guys while Rome is being reduced to cultural embers
France first. He knows what the US is up to in regards to China and wants no part of it for his country. We are slowly moving to a multipolar world and there’s nothing the US can do about it at this point. The neocons have F... everything up. We are in the beginning stages of the end of the American empire and will collapse just like the Soviet Union did in the early 90’s.
France should worry about their own country before concerning themselves about China / America’s pissing contest
I can only imagine the things that XI said to Macron on his failed visit.
According to the title of this piece and the news about his failed visit, I can kind of guess.
Oddly, aside from mutual defense Macron is correct. Each nation should pursue policy in its own self-interest. On many things the interests of the United States and that of Europe are mutual. On others they are not.
Many of our policies in the Middle East have been poor and detrimental to the USA. Iraq, Iran, Afganistan, Syria, and Libya to cite a few. Obama and Hillary set the Mideast on fire by their policies. It came back to bite us in the ass. Bush Junior tried nation building in Iraq and Afghanistan which not only failed but made us new enemies. Biden has soured relationships with Saudia, Oman and the UAE once our staunchest allies.
The only successful policy in the Middle East was the Abraham Accords which established good relationships between Israel, Saudi, and the UAE. This was under Trump.
PS
It pains me to say Macron is right.
He’s right...and also European crises are not ours either.
As the Québécois would say, “Mange dont ton marde, tapette!”
Ukraine is another Obama European pipeline war. Always was. His admin installed the puppet zelensky for regime change in Russia.
Going green requires all of Russias natural resources and slave labor. Putin will not comply. I didn’t think Xi would either.
I guess that means maybe we ran out afghanistans lithium.
That's how I see Ukraine.
