I am working as swiftly as Texas law allows regarding the pardon of Sgt. Perry.
Thank you for your post.
Let’s hope for justice here.
Very clownish!
How often does the board that the governor appointed, go against the governor wanting a pardon?
I’d ask how Abbot could appoint a new board when this happens but it doesn’t happen-so I dgaf.
Apologies.
My scorn should not have been directed toward you - but rather at the OP, who was lecturing us that we should all to be patient, and respect the slow wheels of Texas justice, which was designed to “limit government power”.
Screw that. It took the Texas Government no time at all to convict an innocent man for defending himself against crazed BLM rioters. Where were these alleged limits of power three years ago when they were needed? Yet we are supposed to be patient with the pardoning process dragging on three years and counting.
Well, it’s the TEXAS Constitution! I’d expect it to be big!;)
You are correct. It’s Free Republic tradition.
Here less than one year: You really shouldn’t comment. You’re a newbie.
Here one to five years: Please read the entire article before commenting.
Here five to ten years: Read the excerpt before commenting. Don’t worry about the rest of the article.
Here 10+ years: Just take a quick glance at the headline. Then say whatever comes to mind.
“but rather at the OP, who was lecturing us that we should all to be patient”
I thought the message was it’s not up to Abbott because of some unaccountable govt drones. While failing to tell us that these are Abbott appointed govt drones.
Both are unacceptable. If Abbott was doing his job, his drones would’ve been prepared and had a recommendation in the ready.
Presidents and most governors have unchecked pardon power. That’s a king-like power, and it doesn’t belong in a republic.
Better that the legislature have the ability to override a pardon, just like they have the ability to override a veto. Checks and balances. If I ever get my time machine working, I’m going to mention this to Thomas Jefferson and the rest of the gang.
And those very Texans would have put this Austin DA in the ground for even considering taking a clear self defense case to a jury for murder.
Maybe the testim9ny of the lead detective stating the DA hid exculpatory evidence from everyone will do the trick. The DA should be Nifonged.
“This alone should get Perry a new trial.”
That doesn’t make sense. Yes, the Soros DA in Travis county was deceptive to the grand jury. But that is separate and irrelevant to the actual trial. There is no claim they held back exculpatory evidence in the trial where he was convicted, so what’s the reason for a new trial?
I meant Sgt Perry was Nifonged. The DA should get what Mike Nifong got.
A Travis County (Austin) jury. Think Berkeley of the South…
> …especially if it’s both wrong and stupid <
LOL! I should have had that in my original comment.
Here 20+ years: No need to even take a quick glance at the headline to comment, because we already know everything.
So this is the affidavit the police investigator wrote, after the DA Garza convinced a grand jury to indict Daniel Perry for shooting the BLM protestor. It was made August 2021
I'm not a laywer (nor from Texas) so I don't know if such a statement is admissable to a jury during trial. As we know, the jury just convicted Perry of murdering the BLM protestor.
Thanks!
Everyone now bemoaning the fact that the Texas governor does not have unchecked pardon power will be glad that is the case the next time that a Democrat gets elected governor and he is unable to issue a blanket pardon of every violent felon in prison because he claims they are all just poor victims of systemic racism.
Usually it is democrat politicians who believe that they will always be in power so the old saying “what goes around comes around” will never apply to them. That is why Harry Reid felt safe in unilaterally abolishing the Senate filibuster over presidential appointments. Less than one year later, democrats lost control of the Senate. Two years after that, Trump was elected President, Republicans controlled both houses of Congress, and President Trump was able to push all of his appointments through on a party line vote.
Thank you, Gov. Abbott.
