WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — Thirteen-year-old Lilly Carriere loves art and sometimes, even homework. She's also an advocate for transgender rights and followed the debate over bills at the statehouse related to LGBTQ issues.
"I didn't know like this was actually Iowa and this was going to happen at first. But when it became more real, I started to get into what is happening," Lilly said.
For her, what comes out of these discussions matter because Lilly started the transition from male to female last year.
"It's a really nice thing having supportive people in my life," Lilly said.
Since Gov. Kim Reynolds signed the 'bathroom bill' into law, when Lilly wants to use the restroom at school now, she must go to the boys' room, unless she requests special accommodations. She did and now uses the bathroom in the nurse's office.
"It's just really frustrating that's happening and I'm being targeted," Lilly said.
The governor also signed a bill into law that bans gender transition procedures for anyone under 18 years old. That ban includes puberty blockers, which Lilly takes every three months.
"It was already hard to get these puberty blockers and and now there's it's just being said, oh, you can't get them anymore," said Katie Carriere, Lilly's mom.
Because of these changes, the Carriere family is planning to move back home to Minnesota.
"When someone comes after your kids. It's hard to just say, 'I'm going to sit back and let that continue to happen,'" said Brandon Carriere, Lilly's dad.
Lilly says this journey was not always easy but she is grateful how her family and friends make life feel easier.
And this is news because? Guess everything else in the location of that silly lib paper is fine, eh? No robberies, no crime, but buy, that poor little sicko......
So a thirteen-year-old brat is dictating to her parents where they must live their lives?
Parents’ fault.
“We found two families who may or may not move out of Iowa - it’s a crisis!”
Back to Minnesota the Oregon of the midwest.
“Look at us, look at us... we’re moving because blah blah blah. We need attention, please, look at us!”
‘i’m being targeted’ ....you made that choice, so lie in your pigpen!
oh ditto on, ‘dltdhyitaoywo!’
It’s their right to move to a place more in line with their liking.
Just as conservatives are fleeing leftist states due to leftist policy...but that’s not newsworthy. That’s just bigoted/intolerant/2nd Amendment-loving/high tax hating racists.
Awesome! Go to New York, Boston, or California. Just don’t bring your mental illness here.
I’ll bet those Iowans are just crying their eyes out over this. They’re going to lose a girly boy with mental issues. I’ll bet most are glad to see the idiot go.
“When someone comes after your kids. It’s hard to just say, ‘I’m going to sit back and let that continue to happen,’” said Brandon Carriere, Lilly’s dad.”
You are the greatest threat to that kid, dad. Man up and straighten him out. Probably have to straighten yourself out first.
You mean *he* is a puppet(and I agree). There are no “transgender” 13 year olds.
Just look at the picture of his mother, all you need to know.
They’re probably moving to Minnesota which is now a sanctuary state for people who want to play adult dress up make believe.
Just because you want to pretend to be a girl, doesn’t mean everyone else has to pretend with you. Your parents and any medical providers that have helped you in this delusion belong in PRISON
Don’t come to Michigan.
Oh you are being targeted alright, but not by whom you currently believe you are being targeted by. Best of luck to you, and hope you have no regrets. Keep us informed.
this poor child is just an extension of his mother’s funky hairstyle... LOOK AT ME syndrome... i am special.
he will eventually grow to understand that his mother was using him.
