Several U.S. Army bases will officially get their new names in the coming months as the military seeks to redesignate bases that currently honor Confederate leaders.
Driving the news: Fort Hood, the major Army base in central Texas, will be redesignated as Fort Cavazos on May 9, the base announced Friday.
The new name honors Gen. Richard Cavazos, the first Latino four-star general and first Latino brigadier general. The base is currently named for John Bell Hood, a Confederate general.
Fort Pickett in Virginia was renamed Fort Barfoot on Friday.

The Army needed so many troops to be assigned at Fort Hood that almost anyone who wanted to stay at (or return to) Fort Hood was pretty much guaranteed of being assigned/reassigned there.
Fort Hood was the ONLY stateside post to which I was assigned. I did three one-year tours to Korea (Camp Casey each time) and one two-year tour to Mannheim, Germany.
Actually he was a great general who simply got fed up with the establishment. He chose poorly in what do about it.
That’s a lotta nappy headed hoes.
This is all they know to do: force change upon anyone not like them.
Liberals are a cancer that should be cut out and incinerated.
The gallant Hood of Texas,
Played Hell in Tennessee
Communism requires historical revisionism in order to function in perpetuity...
Its resounding and total victory in the defeat of capitalism, freedom, and liberty in the United States has engendered the most widespread use of tyrannical control and revisionism since the 1920s Soviet Union...
Ronald Reagan must be crying in his grave at the stupidity of a people that saw, heard, and ignored the precise warnings...
On the bright side, there are only about 997 years of darkest tyranny remaining... Guess at my age, 89.5, not too much hope for outlasting it...
This is what Mao’s Red Guard did. Destroy the past.
More absurd gestures to appease those who can’t be appeased. The pukes this is supposed to placate are laughing at us.
Oh, I'm going ever Southward to tell my tale of woe,
I'm going back to Georgia to see my Uncle Joe;
You may talk about your Beauregard or sing of General Lee,
But the gallant Hood of Texas sure played Hell in Tennessee!
“Fort Benning in Georgia will be renamed Fort Moore on May 11 to honor Hal Moore, a U.S. commander during the Vietnam War and Julia Moore, an Army Community Service advocate.”
I was born on Ft. Benning. It’s nice to know that now I was born on a base co-named after a community service advocate.
🤮🤢
SCV member here. The desecration of American history is unforgiveable. I hope the base signage is being saved for when it goes back up again.
Most are probably so poorly educated that they have no idea who a given base is named after.
They are already renaming places, anyplace with an American Indian name is getting replaced
Pretty sure Hal Moore was white.
I’m glad my former Army base Ft. McClellan in Anniston Alabama (now decommissioned) was named after a Union general (1861-1862). It would be heartbreaking to have the name of a base you served at, wiped from history in disgrace.
Token.
They could just rename West Point itself since BA tried to sell it to the British.
