Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’s donors and supporters are beginning to question if the potential 2024 Republican presidential candidate should run in the next election cycle — a bid that would put him against former President Donald Trump — or wait until 2028, according to reports.
According to a report from NBC News, donors and supporters of DeSantis are having second thoughts on the prospect of the governor’s potential presidential bid. Per the report, one main issue seems to be the governor’s ability to take Trump — who has been criticizing the governor for months — head on.
Per the report:
At a Sunday luncheon following the annual Red Cross ball in Palm Beach, Florida, a group of 16 prominent Republicans, described by one attendee as a mix of DeSantis backers and Trump “skeptics,” discussed misgivings about the governor’s standing for the future if he tussles with the former president.
One attendee told the outlet that these individuals believe that DeSantis’s future is better secured without facing Trump directly this election cycle.
“He will get scarred up” by the former president, according to the attendee.
The report also highlighted the newfound hesitancy among some of DeSantis’s backers, including what NBC News described as “conservative billionaire shipping goods magnate Richard Uihlein” and his wife, who gave roughly half a million in contributions to DeSantis’s reelection campaign. NBC News, citing someone “familiar with the strategy” around their spending, said, “The brakes are pumped,” in part, due to DeSantis’s waning status in recent surveys. And, indeed, Trump has continued to grow in survey after survey, even garnering 50 percent or more as DeSantis appears to lose momentum, particularly following the news of Trump’s forthcoming indictment and what some conservatives view as the governor’s insufficient response.

If he backs President trump now he will be a shoe in for 2028
We will remember what he does now ...
I’m loving the drip-drip-drip anti-Ron coverage....
We’ve only just begun......
Des-natis mucho?
While your analysis is correct they will not let Trump have a second term.
The biggest problem we face is the plurality of GOP primary voters who will ensure that Trump is soundly defeated in 2024.
I'd like to think it's for the best and that maybe he'd finally go away but it won't be.
They'll be right back claiming he's the only one who can "drain the swamp!" in 2028 and costing us that election as well.
I have said it before and I will say it again. Trump WILL be the nominee. Period. It’s not even close. GOP voters are milquetoast voters for primary races and always have been. The MAGA base is the strongest source of support any Republican has enjoyed since Reagan and you could never put a price tag on it.
I am so confident of this that I think Trump should focus on the general race with little attention paid to his “opponents” (he won’t do this - he is incapable of it).
DeSantis will NEVER be President if he runs against Trump. It won’t happen. I don’t know who is pumping sunshine up his rear end, but he needs to get a clue or get better advisors. He seems to think he can get in the weeds with Trump and emerge victorious, but he won’t for 24 and he will be damaged goods beyond because the MAGA base holds a grudge.
I was hoping that DeSantis would finish his term in Florida and run for 28, but with his core “supporters” I am honestly having second thoughts about him at all because some of the republicrats who support him the most are those I can’t stand. Paul Ryan, Karl Rove, the Bush family, the editorial board of the National Review, and the Murdochs are all pushing DeSantis. Every person on the political right should wonder why........
All DeSantis will do by running is damage Trump’s chances to win in 24 because DeSantis will get a few points of hardcore support who get mad at Trump. He will do great damage to his political future by doing this. He is young for Presidential politics and this is not yet his time.
I disagree 100%. Trump will win beyond the margin of fraud in 24.
DeSantis is not ready. I don’t know if he will be in 28 either.
He could have just stepped back and not play the “I'm running” game and been picked as VP. Instead, he kept meeting with big money donors and his head inflated way beyond Florida.
The other people running for president aren't viable, on their face.
Trump is the only one with large market presence and the ability to fight the sort of lies the Dems, MSM, and GOPE throws.
I wish Trump were more godly and more conservative, but we need a fighter and he's proven to stand through it all.
Melania is an angel.
I agree — and many former Trump supporters are with you.
so I can fight mohammed Ali or mike tyson now or wait 4 years till they retire...decisions decisions...
Why is DeSantis “not ready? “ he will have been the best Governor in the country for 5 years. You are spewing meaningless words.
Of course he’s ready, but I don’t think he’s going to commit and I’ve been saying that for months.
He’s a governor of Florida he’s in charge he likes Florida, Florida likes him and he seems to be doing a good job. Why would he want to go do a second tour up in DC?
The GOPe is sending Karl Rove and the rest of the Bushes out pushing DeSantis. All they will accomplish is making DeSantis unelectable in 2028. Political suicide!!
You win Post of the Thread!
Saying Trump will win because he has big rallies is not intelligent.
Wait Until 2028!
Spot on.
2028, please. We need him to finish out his term as governor here in Florida until he is termed out. I don’t think he or Trump or anyone can make material changes to the deep state and we need Florida to become as self sufficient as possible in the short time we have. Desantis has done great things here and we need him to keep doing them.
DeSantis is not running.
