HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) — Foot Locker announced during a recent investor meeting that it plans to close more than 400 stores inside shopping malls, according to Business Insider.
Foot Locker says the closures are part of its newest business plan that it refers to as “Lace Up.” The plan is meant to act as a “reset” for the retail sneaker chain.
Part of the reset includes the closing of 400-plus shopping mall locations and then the start of opening free-standing store locations for niche audiences, according to Business Insider. Though Foot Locker will be closing an estimated 420 low-performing stores by 2026, they then, in turn, plan to open more than 300 new, free-standing stores.

So are malls.
They get looted a lot in the malls. Except for the work boot section. That section never takes a loss, for some reason.
This is the mashing together of the Chris Rock take on Malls (”..and the one where whites used to shop”),
and then Spinal Tap’s “catering to a more exclusive Audience”
But seriously, Who goes to malls anymore? And as shoes are probably a massive theft target, what are their “shrinkage” numbers?
I really don't understand it. Some things you just have to handle and try on to know if you want it. There is no substitute. Waiting days or weeks to send something ordered by mail back for a different size or fit seems LESS convenient than in-person shopping.
Are there any stores inside malls that are thriving - or even breaking even?
Any malls turning a profit?
The mall in my town is 1/2 closed, Sears finally closed its doors and the Bed, Bath & Beyond closed recently.
Couldn’t be the local Amish that drive in in the evenings to hang out, could it?
Could be
Baybrook Mall in Webster Texas is still thriving. Lots of growth in satellite stores in and around there. Then again this is in Texas.
Ha! I was going to post.....who even goes to malls, anymore?
We know the answer, to that.
Sad what they’ve turned into.....I’m shocked any malls are still operating, as such.
That's a good one!
Also, I don't believe we've ever had a situation of a Barnes & Noble being looted. Probably the safest place to go during an urban street riot.
Malls were very good before online shopping and before they became infested with hood rats. Not really hard to figure out their demise.
I don’t understand your comments about the border - I will say that for many Americans malls are a relic of the time before online shopping and developed at a time when there were less women working and they had to take the kids somewhere if not in school. There will always be malls but there will just be less of them and many will evolve into “experiential lifestyle” centers. Besides, air conditioned malls are very expensive to maintain relative to drive in/drive out strip centers.
Those darn kids!
And he’d have gotten away with it too!
“Any malls turning a profit?”
I would imagine the “King of Prussia” mall in PA. That mall is ALWAYS crowded with people buying stuff. W hen we go, it’s hard to find a parking spot. Also, the mall is massive—second largest mall in America. (I believe)
Malls are closing in Texas too - they won’t ever go away entirely, just will be fewer of them.
“The King of Prussia Mall in Upper Merion Township of Pennsylvania is the largest retail space in the U.S., with over 450 stores, over 30 eateries and boutiques in the seven department stores. It is East Coast’’s ultimate shopping destination — and one of the United States’ biggest malls in terms of size — and serves the Greater Philadelphia region that includes Chester Montgomery, and Delaware counties”
That begs the question, why did they become infested with hood rats?
Too many Air Jordans walking out the front door all by themselves?
