“The New Normal”: New York to Lower Math and English Proficiency Standards Due to Poor Test Results
Jonathan Turley Res Ipsa Loquitur ^ | 03/17/2023 | Jonathan Turley

I recently wrote how public educators and unions were methodically killing public education. The best example this week comes from New York where a school board committee has solved the dismal math and reading scores for children in the system . . . they lowered the standards. This is not the first system to gut its standards rather than improve its quality of education. As teachers and unions object to school choice, they continue to make the case for private education. Parents are increasingly voting with their feet. The board is simply calling the lack of proficiency “the new normal” and changing the standards. Done.

New York will permanently lower the math and reading proficiency standards after embarrassing results in state testing. It is akin to shortening the 100 yards dash to 50 yards to stay competitive on speed. *** There is now an acceptance that the public schools cannot actually educate students to proficiency levels needed to succeed in the modern world. In the meantime, some districts are moving to a four-day work week for teachers to reduce stress.

We previously discussed the elimination of gifted and talented programs to achieve equity by artificially lowering everyone to the same level.

Other schools have eliminated the “F” to guarantee 100 percent passage rates.

Still others have suspended proficiency standards to simply graduate students who cannot reach required levels in writing, math, and English.

There is also a move to end standardized testing.

In a prior column, I was particularly moved by the frustration of a mother in Baltimore recently who complained that her son was in the top half of his class despite failing all but three of his classes. Graduating students without proficiency in English or Math is the worst possible path for these students, schools and society. ***

Your bag example is just an example of process control when many persons are in nvolved in fulfilling the order.

Receipt 1: Start of process opportunity for the customer to verify the order was input correctly.

Receipt 2: Measure to increase efficiency in identifying your order among all the others being processed at that moment.

Receipt 3: Pick/packing slip for the order for quality control and a precaution aimed at preventing the customer from claiming they were not given a receipt.

This is what a collapsing nation looks like. Plus the kid confusion, grooming & mutilation. Not a nation even remotely under God anymore.

Khan Academy could bring all NYC and other failing city school kids' proficiency up to snuff in a flash. Sal Khan is an incredible teacher for anyone at any level. It's on youtube and it's free.

Agreed.

The Khan Academy is an invaluable resource. It is the future of education.

Repeatedly, I have had to help cashiers in their 20’s and even 30’s do simple math a 2nd grader could do when I was a kid.

A dumbed down nation. No competition against rising economies.

Well, it was Himmler, and the plan was to make Poland a nation of helots.

Similar to a certain party in control of the executive branch.

Ironic, since Polish mathematicians broke the Enigma code.

And the good news was that the Germans were far too arrogant to believe that the code could be cracked, particularly by Polish untermenschen.

Alan Turing and the cryptologists at Bletchley were secretly from Poland?

Brittanica:

“The Enigma code was first broken by the Poles, under the leadership of mathematician Marian Rejewski, in the early 1930s. In 1939, with the growing likelihood of a German invasion, the Poles turned their information over to the British, who set up a secret code-breaking group known as Ultra, under mathematician Alan M. Turing. Because the Germans shared their encryption device with the Japanese, Ultra also contributed to Allied victories in the Pacific.“

Take them over. Do not enter into a contract with the “teachers’” unions.

No. The Poles brought a working mockup when they were evacuated from Poland as the Germans overran the country.

Yet my kid, 4th in her class with a 4.0, didn’t get into UVA. Meritocracy is long gone, proficiency doesn’t matter any more.

There is now an acceptance that the public schools cannot actually educate students to proficiency levels needed to succeed in the modern world.

However, the pubelick skuuls do an EXCELLANT job of preparing yet another group of Liberal, Democrat voters!

They didn’t plan to get a job in the first place. They collectively enslave those who do have a job.

yes because they are to ignorant to know my name is unusual
and I am obviously in my mid 70s.

Just like when I e-check in online the day before and they ask me the questions again at the front desk when I show up. If the e-check in works, as I believe it does, they should be out of a job.

Lastly after 12 years with my primary doctor he and his nurses might just know it’s me.
