A split among jurors means there will be no death penalty for an Islamic extremist who maniacally raced a truck along a popular New York City bike path, killing eight people and maiming others.

The decision means Sayfullo Saipov, 35, an Uzbekistan citizen who lived in New Jersey, gets an automatic sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole in the October 2017 attack. Jurors told the judge Monday that they were unable to reach the unanimous verdict required for a death sentence.

The sentencing was the culmination of a trial that featured emotional testimony from survivors of the attack and relatives of the five tourists from Argentina, two Americans and a Belgian woman who were killed.

The same jury convicted Saipov in January of 28 charges including murder in aid of racketeering and supporting a terrorist organization.

It returned last month for a penalty phase to decide whether he should be sentenced to death or spend the rest of his life at a maximum security prison in Florence, Colorado. …

He should be put in the general population in a regular prison. He might get justice there.

These were federal charges. Not sure why it took so long for justice.

Like a death penalty would ever be carried out in NY

The threat of such a thing happening is a fraud

Disappointed that the federal death penalty was not imposed, but life without parole at Florence, Colorado will do. That prison is no walk in the park. He’ll be isolated in a single cell and have very little time outside of it. Just don’t let him have any access to computers or other means of shouting out his jihadist platform. Shut him up and let him sit there for the rest of his life.

I hope he breaks out of prison and visits the juror(s) who voted against. Geeze....even a Boston jury voted to execute the Marathon Bomber!

It was a Federal trial. State laws/courts have no say.

No such thing. It could change any time.

At the risk of being chastised....

the religious make-up of a jury matters mightily.

Yes, it does.

Sigh.
