Alex Yenni recently endeavored to take his wife and 5-year-old son bowling with another family in Petaluma, Calif., close to their home. The plan quickly went into the gutter.
Mr. Yenni, a 42-year-old advertising executive, tried to book online in advance at AMF Boulevard Lanes, where he wanted to reserve two lanes for two hours at 3 p.m. on the last Thursday of the year during winter break.
The price quoted by the website, run by national operator Bowlero Corp., knocked him over: $418.90. βThis strikes me as outrageous for a pedestrian family activity,β he said.

Restaurants? Well, I just bought a GroupOn for 6 people to dine at a Korean Steakhouse buffet at a discount of over $60 off regular price. Months ago I got us another GroupOn for two that discounted the price at a Brazilian Steakhouse buffet from $84 total to $37 total.
So the name of the game is to be constantly on the lookout for deals and discounts. Oh, and this week I will be getting my car wash and vacuum for just $6.90 discounted down from around $20.
My family does very well but I’m finding myself sounding like a crotchety old man who is frequently saying... “We’re not paying X for X.”
Movies are a no go for a whole host of reasons.
Our chain grocery store has a very good app that among other features provides a list of buy one get one free items, when they will be available and for how long.
2 for 1 is always a great deal. π
Wait for the last minute to purchase a high demand time slot, pay a huge premium.
The purpose of a business is to make money.
Good service, reasonable prices, and reliable availability are all byproducts of the profit motive combined with Judeo/Christian ethics based society.
Groupon will be gone. More businesses are wising up to their scheme to fleece the local businesses of money.
Wow. Our local place charged $0.50 a game. I thought that was expensive. The 60βs
Couldn't read the rest of the article due to paywall and the WSJ isn't getting a dime of my money anymore.
Nevertheless, bowling can be very expensive, especially at a Bowlero, which is typically high end in the bowling industry.
Billiards is expensive as well. I remember getting charged $30/hr for a table near Fenway Park just a few years ago.
I agree but the second part of your statement is severely lacking in society today. This is really the crux of all of our issues in the world today, lack of morals. This lack of morals turns captitalism into consumerism and profiteering.
Remember that cinema pass of a few years ago? I think it was just $10 per month to see unlimited movies. Of course, after a few months it went out of business but for that period of time I saw a lot of movies.
There are several websites that list the BOGOs for Publix. I just got BOGO bottles of olive oil a few days ago based on the info from one of those sites.
... bowling with another family
Maybe but in the meantime, I've been getting great deals. My only regret is that last Fall I only bought ONE GroupOn when they had 50% off for restaurants (Brazilian steakhouse). I should have bought at least FOUR GroupOns while that deal was available.
1. If it's so pedestrian, then do something else.
2. I can't think of too many things in life that are more pedestrian than what an "advertising executive" brings to the table.
Skokie Robinson & The Miracles- You Better shop around.
Went to Ripleys in st. Augustine .
Groupon cost more than a walk in. Never bought Groupon again.
Yep. We love our Publix but it’s gettin’ so if it’s not some sort of discount we have a hard time shopping there.
Yesterday while there I remembered I needed charcoal.....the price for the name brand looked high so I checked my Walmart app.....sure enough it was a whole FIVE dollars cheaper at Walmart.
Something our store does is crank up the price, then offer a BOGO “discount”. For instance, a 12 pack of soda runs around $10 or so now, if you buy it “on sale” - but with the BOGO the price doubles almost, as they sell the 12 pack for the “regular price” of $18 or thereabouts.
MoviePass.
Publix prices also vary by store location.
In this area, the store West of US1 is ten percent cheaper than the one East of US1
