~The FReeper Canteen Presents~ Road Trip: Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, Texas Naval Air Station Corpus Christi is a United States Navy naval air base located six miles southeast of the central business district of Corpus Christi, in Nueces County, Texas. Training Air Wing Four (TRAWING 4), one of five training air wings under the Chief of Naval Air Training Command, was established in March 1972. Four individual units make up the wing. They are Training Squadrons Twenty-Seven (VT-27), Twenty-Eight (VT-28), Thirty-One (VT-31), and Thirty-Five (VT-35). Training Air Wing Four augment units (SAU) assigned to each squadron respectively. Training Air Wing 4 is the ideal environment for training aviators how to fly. The Naval Aviator training program at NAS Corpus Christi is approximately 18 months, due to the increased complexity of today's aircraft. Currently, Training Air Wing FOUR produces approximately 400 newly qualified aviators each year via the "Maritime Pipeline" for shore-based U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Coast Guard fixed-wing jet and turboprop aircraft, as well as a limited number of NATO/Allied/Coalition military pilots for similar aircraft. The Naval Air Training Command (NATRACOM) is a one star command that conducts flight training of student Naval Aviators, and Naval Flight Officers. Though it does not conduct Naval Aircrew training which is conducted by Naval Education and Training Command's Naval Aviation Schools Command (NASC), it is responsible for monitoring the production of Aircrewmen through the Naval Aviator Production Process (NAPP). Through the NAPP, NATRACOM is also responsible for programming and monitoring the production of all (currently 19) Navy and Marine Corps Fleet Replacement Squadrons. In support of the base's training mission are three nearby outlying landing fields owned by the Navy: Naval Outlying Field Waldron, which is 3.5 miles southwest of the Naval Air Station, Naval Outlying Field Cabaniss, which is 8.0 miles west of the Naval Air Station and Naval Outlying Field Goliad which is 57.7 miles north of the Naval Air Station.
