Nothing focuses the mind quite so intently on the sheer stupidity of government as doing your taxes. What is taken from us is excessive, the intrusiveness is maddening, and the rules are byzantine, which is the distilled essence of most of our interactions with the state. So, it was with a certain degree of anticipation that I told my son that, after working hard at the supermarket in addition to his homeschooling and martial arts, he would have to file his first tax return. Much fun ensued.

It only going to get worse once they hire those 87,000 bean counters with guns. Former dumpster divers.
“Oh, shit,” he said.
“The whole system is based on the premise that the government already knows how much you owe, but won’t tell you. You have to guess,”
I didn’t read the whole piece, and I’m no fan of the IRS, but this is all snark and not accurate at all. I hope this man didn’t actually tell his son this.
Full disclosure: used to be a paid tax preparer for a major chain of them. Always do my own taxes. Not an accountant.
Rush used to say if you paid your taxes by writing a check once a year, people would realize how badly they’re being gouged and there would be more resistance to taxation. Payroll tax withholding is stealthy theft.
Cancel the Income Tax.
Implement the Fair Tax.
Many people who have taxes withheld from their paycheck do not realize how much they are actually paying. I think we should all pay taxes in quarterly installments, like some people have to do; then you will see people demand tax reform and accountability.
If FJB forgives some of the student loan debt do you think they will have to pay taxes on it???
Used H&R Block last year. My taxes are relatively simple, but a 1040-MISC increases their fee astronomically. I was extremely angry. Called their corporate to verify my local branch was being honest. When I found out the 1040-MISC automatically makes taxes “complex,” I determined never to use them again. Used TurboTax for decades, but they, too, have become increasingly irksome, despite their attempts to be chummy.
Not an accountant here but have always done my own taxes since 1978. Today I do our small business taxes (schedule C) with an LLC as a sole proprietor pass through (not enough denaro to go with an S corp yet) Also do schedule E for our rental properties.
Recordkeeping is a must which isn’t easy as hubby is not good at paperwork and was once called the “Bermuda Triangle” when it comes to paperwork at former jobs.
I despise it but I’d rather do it myself then hand it over to someone who may or may not know what they’re doing. My DIL’s father is a certified accountant with his own tax business for several decades. I’ve gotten some good advice from him and other accountants over the years.
I pay my taxes once per year. I never get a refund, only idiots, do.
I hate the IRS. They will need all the ammo they bought.
Ever notice the government scumbags put tax day as far away as possible on the calendar from election day?
Frankly, this should be the BASELINE response.
Every young adult, first-time tax filer SHOULD have a response varying between peeved and rage-filled.
I'd like to hear from a dippy parent, whose progeny pays taxes for the first time and is DELIGHTED!
I was hoping the point of the article was the son seeing how much money the government takes. Filing taxes electronically in a no itemized deductions scenario is actually quite easy. The pain seems to self-inflicted.
One of the many reasons taxes should be based on consumption. Gets rid of the IRS and it incents politicians to keep the economy healthy to maintain tax streams.
I still do my taxes myself on paper forms. Once in a while they correct my return and I write a check.
Why don’t I file online? All the third-party online preparers require a SSN. All the IT wags say to never give out your SSN. So I fill out my taxes on paper forms. I’ve not seen these “free fillable forms” the article describes and, after the experience of the author and his son, I’ll stick to what I know.
No, they don’t send me the forms anymore. I have to go to an IRS tax assistance center to get them. Those places used to be full of people and I just grabbed what I needed from the rack of forms. Now, you need an appointment to see anyone so the places are nearly empty. I still get my forms off the rack but I have to tell the security guard to hand them to me. (I don’t have an appointment!)
, but this is all snark and not accurate at all.
It is the self employed and business that is incomplete.
IRS could just send the bill for all employees and retirees now. They just don’t know your illegal stuff and petty stuff............yet.
Fear of penalty is what keeps you in line.
