WASHINGTON (AP) — Niara Thompson couldn’t shake her frustration as the Supreme Court debated President Joe Biden’s student debt cancellation. As she listened from the audience Tuesday, it all felt academic. There was a long discussion on the nuances of certain words. Justices asked lawyers to explore hypothetical scenarios.
For Thompson, none of it is hypothetical. A student at the University of Georgia, she grew up watching her parents struggle with student loans and will graduate with about $50,000 of her own student debt.
Thompson and her father are each eligible for $10,000 in relief, she said. It would move her a step closer to financial stability, Thompson said, and it would eliminate the rest of her dad’s loans.
Ella Azoulay, a 26-year-old who lives in Washington, visited the rally to join the push for debt relief, which she calls a “family issue.” A 2018 graduate of New York University, Azoulay has $40,000 in student debt, while her dad has more than $400,000 taken out on behalf of her and her two siblings.
“I can’t really think about my future without thinking about this huge debt,” she said. “My dad has no plans to retire. He’s in his 60s and he has said for my whole life that he will never be able to retire. And that’s really upsetting to hear.”
Kayla Smith, 22, joined Thompson at the overnight campout for a seat inside the court. A recent graduate of the University of Georgia, she also felt the discussion missed the bigger picture.
Smith’s mother borrowed more than $20,000 in federal Parent Plus loans to help her pay for college. Smith sees it as the result of a broken system that forces people into debt for a shot at social mobility.

“Provide relief to up to 43 million borrowers, including cancelling the full remaining balance for roughly 20 million borrowers.”
The scale of Joe’s voter subornation is massive.
Probably, a well-meaning idiot. But yea, NYU took this guy to the cleaners. What do you want to bet that, out of the three, not one got a degree that is worth a damn.
I really hate what universities have been getting away with this country for the past 20-30 years.
That's the root of the problem, and nobody is will to talk about it.
Exactly. Imaging going to bank and asking for a loan with no government involvement.
Loan officer: What is your major?
Student: Intersectional Transgender Grievance Studies with a minor in Social Justice.
Loan officer: Can you say, “do you want fries with that?”
They borrowed it, they should pay it back. Who do they think they are, Congress?
You took out the loan. Pay it back like you promised when you signed for it. I paid mine back.
Get a F-ing job you lying sack of s^^t!
If these grifters can’t pay back $20k at a favorable interest rate, how will they be able to afford their newly mandated EV?

“her dad has more than $400,000 taken out on behalf of her and her two siblings”
Her Dad is an IDIOT who deserves to work his entire life and die poor. Sorry but HIS stupidity isn’t MY responsibility.
What’s to debate?
You borrowed the money, YOU pay it back. Simple.
The fact that Biden even tried to do this certifies how bad this country has gotten. We need to MAGA.

I agree 100% with that. There should be an accounting for that but it will never happen. Perhaps there is some way for a class action claw back.
I agree. I paid for my college and professional school with a combination of the GI Bill and student loans. My wife used student loans. We paid back every penny of the loans over a 10 year period. To me, this was fair. We chose to go to college and it was our responsibility to pay our own ways. Forgiving student debt for those who, at least in theory, will be among the high earners is unfair to those who chose to go to work without college. Why should those people have to pay taxes to fund ridiculous majors for those who now are crying the blues because they must pay for what they got?
Imma have to call BS on this one. In GA we have the Hope Scholarship which covers all tuition for four years. You have to pay for books and meals. My best friend has recently had both her boys over in Athens at UGA. They pay for a cheap apt for the two boys and the boys have perfume jobs to pay for meals and gas. No way this girl needed to rack up $50,000 in student loans.
If she let her at home the cost of a 4 year degree would be minimal.
I paid my own way through a BA and an MBA. I paid my kids way through bachelors degrees and spent an easy $200,000 doing it.
When’s my check coming?
Full stop. It was never, EVER intended that a parent should take out more than $400k in student loans--yes, there are 3 students in total, but seriously--who thought this was a reasonable idea? Furthermore, why is it society's responsibility to help pay this back? What are WE getting for our investment?
There needs to be some better "safety rails" in place to prevent this much in student loans from EVER being taken out in the first place.
I got a high school education
I got jobs
I went to night school 10 years later
I paid for all those costs myself
I got 4.0 in all my Accounting classes
I NEVER got more than $20 an hour pay
I OWN ALL MY PROPERTY AND ALL MY OTHER ASSETS
AGAIN-—THAT is tampering with a contract.
IF they got fired for not passing drug tests-—cannot blame that ‘on the trades”.
I don't think the government is the lender for most student loans (although I could be wrong.) I know for VA (mortgage) loans they just guarantee a certain percentage of the the loan (20%? 25%), and I think they do something similar for college loans.
