“Initially, not forever. That’s why the agreement states Russia agreed to gradually withdraw those troops, which it has not.”

Depends on one’s definition of ‘gradually’. Regardless, they’ll leave when they’ve secured peace with Moldova, after liberating Ukraine.

there are no tankers full of refined gas products, Bob ... NatGas only comes via pipeline or LNG, and that’s now cut off

and any “refined oil products” that Russia manages to ultimately sell back to Europe via India or whatever, represent only a fraction of what Russia used to sell to Europe

1 year ago Russia was selling 155 billion m3 of NatGas every year

now ... less than 10% of that ... that’s a 90% drop in less than 1 year

Russia used to get half its revenues from O & G ... what country can survive that kind of cut in income?

Nice try at DEFLECTION, pal. By the way, the IMF updated their prediction for the Russian economy to GROWTH this year, rather than recession.

Kind of sucks (for you guys), doesn’t it.

Depends on one’s definition of ‘gradually’

AND that is the problem with dealing with the Russians and signing any agreements.

Can’t remember ANY statements from the Russians that match what’s come out of the West this year...so I can’t blame them if they decide to fully liberate Ukraine.

Historically, Russia has seen its neighbors as one of only two groups: vassal states and mortal enemies. The more vassal states surround Russia, the happier they are.

you should remember the Budapest Agreement
The Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances comprises three substantially identical political agreements signed at the OSCE conference in Budapest, Hungary, on 5 December 1994, to provide security assurances by its signatories relating to the accession of Belarus, Kazakhstan and Ukraine to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). The three memoranda were originally signed by three nuclear powers: the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom and the United States

According to the three memoranda,[5] Russia, the US and the UK confirmed their recognition of Belarus, Kazakhstan and Ukraine becoming parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and effectively abandoning their nuclear arsenal to Russia, and that they agreed to the following:

  1. Respect the signatory's independence and sovereignty in the existing borders
  2. Refrain from the threat or the use of force against the signatory.
  3. Refrain from economic coercion designed to subordinate to their own interest the exercise by the signatory of the rights inherent in its sovereignty and thus to secure advantages of any kind.
  4. Seek immediate Security Council action to provide assistance to the signatory if they "should become a victim of an act of aggression or an object of a threat of aggression in which nuclear weapons are used".
  5. Refrain from the use of nuclear arms against the signatory.
  6. Consult with one another if questions arise regarding those commitments.
So Russia has reneged on its promises 1,2, 3 and 5

So, as tlozo pointed out, the Russians renege on their agreements.

canuck “oh, because Russia has a long history of attacking neighboring countries”

bobl “When they’re goaded to do so,”

What are you making up?
Putin’s Russia attacked Georgia for no reason
Putin’s Russia attacked Ukraine in 2014 and grabbed land in violation of its own 1994 agreement

“Putin’s Russia attacked Georgia for no reason”

Tough crap, we did the same to Serbia and bunch of other countries. It’s called the RULES-BASED INTERNATIONAL ORDER.

Funny thing is that if we HAD NOT invited them into NATO in 2008, they’d still have a future as a country, possibly with a shot at joining the EU.

Oh well, when you swing for the fences, you often miss.

“Please, don’t play ignorant. Russian propagandists on Russian tv have called for nuking the West.”

It’s because the TOTAL IDIOTS running the West, you know, the people you support, seem to think that Russian nukes either don’t exist or won’t work. In the end, if we get through this TOTAL IDIOCY without a nuclear war, you can THANK the Russians for those statements.
