Drug-resistant stomach bug spreading across US: ‘Serious public health alert

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a “serious public health” alert, warning of a nationwide spike in “extensively drug-resistant” shigellosis.

The highly contagious shigella bacterial infection attacks the intestines and causes inflammatory, sometimes bloody diarrhea, according to the CDC’s “emergency and preparedness response.”

There are about 450,000 shigellosis infections every year in the US, resulting in an estimated $93 million in direct medical costs, according to CDC data. The agency also reported that 5% of all infections in 2022 were extensively drug-resistant (XDR) — a jump from zero drug-resistant cases in 2015.

An infection is considered XDR when it doesn’t respond to antibiotics that are typically used to treat it, such as azithromycin, ciprofloxacin and ceftriaxone, among others.

“XDR shigellosis is resistant to all generally recommended antibiotics in the United States, making it difficult to treat,” according to the new report. XDR shigellosis is a serious public health threat: XDR Shigella bacteria have limited antimicrobial treatment options, are easily transmissible, and can spread antimicrobial resistance genes to other enteric bacteria.

Mask up and....social distance, close down businesses, send kids home from school, rat out your neighbor....

And get a couple of shots and a few boosters.

I am retired but in the clinical lab it was really rare, in my experience, to encounter shigella.

We don’t need a vaccine. Seriously.

450,000 infections per year in the US. Is that vaccine worthy?

Unless it is the drug resistant thing.

Just wash your hands people.

Lovely. I just had surgery on my @ss. (Never let constipation go untreated too long — life tip). Now I have to worry about a third world disease. I already know I picked up a UTI from being in the hospital.

All terrific advice but shigella is not a new disease.

Me, too. My dad was three back in 1927 when he, his older brother, his older sister, and mom & dad arrived at Elis Island. They got the full treatment. If you didn’t pass the health exam, you weren’t admitted.

My grandpa passed through Ellis Island in 1899. The health inspectors were especially worried about tuberculosis and an eye disease. If you were sick with something else they would hospitalize you until you got better. Their attitude apparently was err on the side of letting you in rather than the contrary.

On the other hand, my grandpa had to have a ‘sponsor’ who would agree to make sure grandpa did not become a public charge. No welfare, food stamps, etc.

Another monkeypox issue (as in being spread primarily by the same transmission vector)?

Surely everyone flooding across our borders is thoroughly checked for heath issues ... you know like my great grandparents were.

Riiight...just like they're supposed to have a sponsor who promises to take care them so that they don't become "a ward of the state"...

Are there salad bars anywhere anymore? The two places near me that had them don’t have them anymore. Heck, one of the places closed up. Lockdowns took care of that one. The other place is still going strong thankfully, but sadly, no more salad bar.

Same for my grandparents. Grandpa came over as a child in 1897, and Grandma came as a teenager with part of her family, around 1910 or so. I don’t remember the year, maybe even as late as 1917. Both were at Ellis Island with their families until they could be examined and were shown to have no illnesses. They had to have a sponsor to make sure they wouldn’t be a burden to the government. No handouts.

Ahhh, I don’t live anywhere close to one of those. I didn’t even know they were still open.

The "immigrant" flood across our borders is the equivalent of every backed-up third world toilet.

Enoch Powell was right.

I guess if we don’t eat poop or have anal sex, all is good:

And what about all those unclean hands picking and processing produce? That is a worrisome vector.

“Are there salad bars anywhere anymore?”

If there are, there shouldn’t be. My husband and I stopped eating from salad bars way before Covid after watching a pack of kids go from one bin to the other licking spoons and putting them back in the food.
