Virginia lawmakers approved legislation on Thursday that will make organized retail theft a Class 3 felony.
Those convicted of the crime will be eligible for prison sentences as long as 20 years.
It will be a Class 3 felony for anyone to conspire or act in concert with one or more people to steal retail merchandise with a value exceeding $5,000 in a 90-day period, with the intent to sell the stolen goods for profit.
Approximately $1.3 billion in merchandise is stolen this way annually, according to a state report.

The legislation has the support of Gov. Glenn Youngkin.
"They’re not stealing so they can go home and feed their family. This is theft for some kind of financial gain," Republican Del. Kathy Byron, the lead sponsor of the House bill, told The Associated Press.

This is a blatantly anti-black law.
Virginians should be proud of themselves of how they’ve been handling the Democrat woke attack on society. They’re only second to Florida.
Developing the proof will be problematic. The law will be weak and inconsequential
$5,000 in a 80 day period ...
Good luck with that ...
How about jail for the first offence ??? Any amount ...Every time ...
6 months and there would be no chance to reach the 90 day point ...
Whoops
90 day period ...
“Organized retail to become Class 3 felony in Virginia”
Damn, pretty much will shutdown all the chain stores. Hopefully it’s not signed by the governor.
Where dems are in power, they have allowed the subclass to help itself to the goods produced by the hard-working, honest people who are sick of being hated and blamed for the failures of the subclass.
I have a problem with the $5000 per 90 day home free part of the law. So a group does a $5000 robbery today and doesn’t get caught and tomorrow they do another one that nets $4999 and they can’t be prosecuted.
Plus is that $5,000 the amount the goods would have been sold for by the merchant ???
Or the amount the thief got when he sold them ???
Theres a defense argument right there ...
“My innocent client only benefitted by $10 your Honor, not the $5,000 the merchant is claiming ..”

Will bail be required, or will there be a revolving door installed for the bad guy’s convenience?

They will just get more use from the existing one.
Headline misleading
Yes, that’s a bit odd, to say the least. So evidently a thief could steal $1500 a month, every month, and still avoid a felony. And that’s assuming they get caught each and every time.
The only plus here is that these thieves are usually not very good at math. So it’s possible that they could accidentally go over the limit.
Label every item in the stores at $6,000. Discounts available at checkout counter
I’m skeptical that in a practical sense this is a little more than theater.
It seems somewhat like saying that everyone who steals on Tuesdays and Thursdays is in deep trouble.
Not a single person will go to prison for this. Not one.
Unbelievable, these minority yutes finally get jobs and start their own businesses and the first thing that happens is big government tries to shut them down...
OR allowing police to do their job OR having DAs do their job.
