Why Jimmy Carter deserved my vote — and that of other Black Americans

The first time I voted for president, I was a college student in New York City in 1980. I was intrigued by Jimmy Carter as he campaigned for re-election, wondering why a southern white man had strong support in the Black community. The sad news that the 98-year old former president is under home hospice care brought back memories of those days of crisis.

That summer, I had a chance to see Carter at the NAACP national convention in Miami Beach. It occurred shortly after a riot over police brutality in the predominantly Black neighborhoods of Liberty City and Overton in Miami. In December 1979, four white police officers were charged with the beating death of motorcyclist Arthur McDuffie, an insurance salesman and Marine veteran. The trial presented incriminating evidence to an all-white jury — which acquitted the officers on May 17, 1980.

In 1980 I was dating a really pretty brunette until I found out she supported Carter. I wanted a smarter girlfriend.

A southern white man had such strong support in the black community because he was a Democrat.

For unknown reasons black people vote heavily Democratic.

Carter being a southern white man really has nothing to do with this. Just because he was a Democrat , he got the bulk of the black vote in his elections.

True but he was honest, a breath of fresh air after Teddy K.

Nothing racist in that sentence, right? So tired of it.

It’s Overtown...not Overton. I had occasion to stroll through there one very early morning in 1981, with a couple of Air Force buddies. Scared the hell out of the only other white person we saw.

That just shows what we see in elections to this day: libs vote for rats in an emotional reasons. They’ll typically re-elect them for the same reason, irrespective of whether or not they actually do a good job

Jimmy Carter lost his first bid for a seat in the GA Senate (he won the second time).

He was furious because, he said, the “election was stolen”.

He was a pioneer election denier.

Yep. Beat me to it. I know Carter was a moron, but the other morons out there could only think of post-Vietnam Ann Ford’s ability to put us asleep with his monotone voice.

A liberal friend in Portland told me that it’s because they’re smart. Like him.

Carter, failed President, successful Appeaser-in Chief to the Mad Mullahs. One of America’s foremost anti-Semitic spokesmen.

Nice guys finish last.

What’s wrong with that question?! It is a perfectly legitimate question considering the place and time. You forget what the southern white men did to black people in the decades prior? Weren’t southern white men synonymous with racism at that time? So, why did they vote for the southern white guy instead of the white guy from the west coast? The only conclusion you can draw, is that he was a democrat. What is so tiring, is that every statement made concerning white and black is racist.

“The verdict ignited a conflagration as angry people in Liberty City and Overton burned buildings, attacked cars and chased down fleeing motorists. The riot left 15 people dead, caused $100 million in property damage, and exacerbated racial tensions across the country.”

Mobs of angry white Democrats hadn’t burned down a black community since the ‘20s ... so guess who was being that “well bless their hearts” kinda stupid to go on a rampage in their own communities, destroying businesses that they and their neighbors depend on for jobs or places to shop?

The median income of Liberty City is less than $20k and less than $15k for Overton ... the riots and destruction of wealth in 1980 certainly contributed to that because riots have long term consequences.

Shoot rioters and looters ... their rage is not worth your future being harmed.

But Teddy K was a factor in Carter not getting re-elected.
