The European Union will ban new sales of fossil fuel cars from 2035, after MEPs approved a new law Tuesday, as Brussels also draws up plans to slash carbon emissions from trucks and buses.
European Union member states have already approved the legislation on cars and vans and they will now formally nod it into law, but much debate lies ahead on proposed measures against larger freight and passenger vehicles.
Supporters of the car bill -- passed in the European Parliament in Strasbourg -- argue it gives European automakers a clear timeframe to switch production to electric vehicles and will spur investment to counter competition from China and the United States.

Americans buy EU ICE cars mostly for prestige (Audi, BMW, Merc) and supposedly for their engineering, including their powertrains. Converting to BEV means that every powertrain is going to essentially be the same, with few distinctions. Who wants to pay for a $120K BMW EV when a $50K Nissan EV will provide essentially the same performance? I believe BEV handling will also be less of a factor in choosing a pricier platform, with nearly all of them keeping COM way down low and front/rear weight distribution becoming more equal.
I expect at least 2 US automakers and 1 Japanese automaker to continue selling at least some ICE vehicles well into the 2040s. And I think they’re going to clean up here in the states, where power generation capacity and infrastructure, lithium shortages, and practical limitations of BEVs are going to prevent them from massive adoption. And frankly, a few pre-GenZ generations are going to have to die off before BEVs are accepted here.
I also think that anyone who is mechanically-inclined and younger than 18 needs to think seriously about training for a career in gas and/or diesel repair instead of college, because the 80% of us who don’t want to drive a glorified golf cart will need to keep our rides going. Auto mechanics will be paid even more handsomely than now.
> EU to Ban Fossil Fuel Cars <
I think this is a good idea. After all, the EU has huge reserves of electrical generating power.
Oh, wait. The EU doesn’t have huge reserves of electrical generating power. Never mind.
They finally have an excuse to ban cars.
It is a good thing that oil is not a fossil fuel
While China is building a new coal fired power plant every week. India is not far behind that pace. So EU will use the more expensive & erratic green power while Asia uses the cheapest power from coal. Great strategy!
In fifty years the most common vehicle in Europe will be rickshaws.
In one hundred years it will be mules.
Forward comrades!
Financial suicide all in the name of a lie.
How long can the massive petroleum infrastructure continue, though? How long before they outright ban all petroleum?
Banned except for the state and its powerful agents.
Morons. They don’t have enough electrical energy now to keep the lights on and I’ll bet good money that there is nowhere near enough new electrical generation in the plans to meet the demand.
I'm also surprised that I've not seen any discussion of converting military vehicles to BEV. Of course, where in a battle zone would one find a working charging station?
Who has the betting pool on how soon a panic begins to reverse or at least delay this as it becomes too obvious that it is impossible?
2033, or later as they keep their heads in the sand until it is too late?
If they actually go through with this it will end several formerly major brands.
The effects of this “Green” cancer on their economies will not be benign.
Same for us if we do not resist this tyranny.
Good, cheaper oil for us.
I’d rather burn gas and annoy the Left
‘Cause they lie to advance their commie trash
Scratch an enviro and find a Red
Why 2035? Why not 2027, 2028,.....
What is the plan? What is it going to cost? Who pays for it? Who gets the money? More promises that will never be kept. But, I’m cool with it. I’ll gladly pay for it in 2035, but until then leave me alone.
I watched a YT video the other day, made by a mechanic I respect. He was examining a 2016 Kia that had come in.
The lady who owned it, apparently never checked her oil. There was less than 2 quarts nasty oil in the crankcase. At only 40k miles, not sure how many times the oil had been changed, but (according to him) it is common for Kia engines to start using oil. And this one had been run until it was out.
So, here was car in good shape with a bad engine, but it gets worse. Apparently Kia engines have a bad rep and rebuilding is not something most shops do. The only solution is replacing the engine at a cost of over $8000, including labor. This, for a car with a market value of about $10,000. The owner is best off walking away, suffer the repo and buying another car.
His comments that struck me were that “this failure happens over and over and will sell a lot of electric cars.”
Many of today’s kids don’t have someone to teach them how to care for a car, and living in apartments makes maintenance difficult. Sadly, since broken homes are more and more common, there’s few dads are around to teach car care, and most cosmopolitan college educated women today can’t find the hood release.
I speak from some experience here. And I can see where the complexity of conventional cars will drive those who ‘just need a reliable car’ to buy an EV which needs little maintenance.
Well, sure. Once you’ve killed off all but 500 million of the Earth’s population, it’ll be easy to implement.
Correct. They don't plan to meet it. The plan is to limit the freedom of movement of the peasants. and move everyone into "15 minute cities" which resemble the dwellings of social insects. Drive on a vacation? - nope - not for you, grocery store twice a month and hope they're not out of everything when it's your day.
2035? Isn’t that the deadline for California to ban the sale of ICE cars?
Do these globalists, in any country, not have one single, original idea?
