Don’t discount the possibility that they were just engaged in more mundane academic cheating.
Many professors are lazy and use the same test materials and questions, semester after semester. I knew of international student cheating rings as an undergraduate. Each student would memorize one or two questions on a test. They’d then create a test bank of questions and answers for their classes. They’d practice the right answers until they had them memorized.
