President Biden said on Saturday that he had ordered the Pentagon earlier in the week to shoot down the Chinese surveillance balloon traveling over the U.S. “as soon as possible.”
“On Wednesday, when I was briefed on the balloon, I ordered the Pentagon to shoot it down … as soon as possible,” Biden told reporters in Hagerstown, Md.
However, amid concerns about the potential dangers of downing the balloon over land, Biden said his national security officials decided that “the best time to do that was when it got over water.”
The U.S. shot down the surveillance balloon off the coast of South Carolina on Saturday afternoon, after it spent several days traversing the U.S.
“They successfully took it down, and I want to compliment our aviators that did it,” Biden added.

Respectfully, I can't find this believable. Tried, can't.
This Veteran strongly suspects that even before Wednesday, our Defense Department had a shootdown solution prepared and ready to go.
I don't know this for a fact, but that's my best guess.

FYI: The warhead on the US Sidewinder missile did NOT detonate when it impacted the Chinese War Balloon. It could be because the target was too soft to cause the missile’s impact fuse to work, and maybe its proximity fuse could not “see” the thin floating balloon enough, that it was unable to reflect enough of a signal to “read” its proximity. But more likely? I believe the US Air Force removed the explosive warhead from the missile, so they were basically firing a supersonic dart at the balloon, so as to take no chances of damaging the technological apparatus it was carrying!
