PETER HITCHENS: Sending Ukraine our tanks could turn Europe into one big radioactive graveyard
DailyMail.com ^ | 1/21/2023 | Peter Hitchens

Posted on 01/21/2023 9:34:21 PM PST by Nextrush

This was the moment at which we began the unstoppable descent into terrible danger which so many of us will bitterly regret in times to come.

I won't waste time here going over the question of who started the Ukraine war, or even why. Most people don't want to know and refuse to think about it, or look up the facts. They defame and abuse anyone who tries to tell them. So to hell with that. I'm bored with trying.

The Government claims to be in favour of free debate in universities, so all the stage army of "Right-wing" thinkers and scribblers whoop with admiration that we can now perhaps discuss the transgender issue. Well and good.

But the Government and its tame thinkers are not in favour of free debate on crucial national policy...

When the Defence Secretary announced that British tanks were going to Ukraine, not one MP raised any doubts or opposed the move. Not one. To read the record of the non-debate is like reading the proceedings of some Communist fake parliament...

What we have just decided to do is to prolong and deepen the war. Maybe Ukraine's new tanks will sweep all before them. Maybe they will bog down. Maybe they will try to take Crimea. Maybe they will soon be taking part in a Victory Parade on Red Square. I don't know. But if they cross into what Russia regards at its own territory, then do not be surprised by anything which happens...

But why is Britain in this affair? I know that a lot of voters in key states in America hate Russia because their forebearers came from lands Moscow had oppressed. I know that some neo-conservative fanatics in Washington have long desired to dismantle Russia and ensure that is never an important...

The pressure to support this war feels exactly like the pressure to support all of the insane and suicidal government measures taken against the covid “pandemic”. If you were against being locked down and imprisoned in your own house or having your children’s school closed and your business pushed into bankruptcy, well you were anti-science, you wanted to kill everybody’s grandmother. If you don’t support this war then you are a traitor and a Russian stooge. Both of these issues, the war and “pandemic” bear the tell-tale signs of WEF/globalist policy. There is no debate allowed and you are a scumbag if you don’t agree. That’s how WEF rolls.

"No Western powers are threatening Russia itself nor are any Western powers directly fighting against Russia in Ukraine."

Pure legalisms. Right now today Putin knows that Russia is actually at war with the US. We're close to ICBMs flying in both directions, IMHO.

Hitchens is not au courant with military realities.

Tanks are valuable in defense. Classic cites are the defense of the Golan Heights, 1973, largely undertaken by two Israeli armored brigades. They are also useful for counter-attacks, which is an essential defensive tactic. NATO armor design and force structure was oriented to, primarily, a defensive role in resisting a powerful Soviet attack, where US/NATO forces expected to be substantially outnumbered.

And worse yet, he does not entertain the likelihood of limited Ukrainian objectives, that of recovering the remainder of their occupied territories. It is unlikely that Ukraine will, after recovering the Donbas, then go on to take Rostov.

In general I find Hitchens a bitter and despairing man. He claims otherwise, sometimes, but its clearly there.

Russia and Ukraine have been beefing since at least the time that the Soviet government planted unstable nuclear reactors on Ukrainian soil. One day, back in the 80s, one of them blew up spectacularly, poisoning huge swaths of Ukraine farmland, leading to the high level of animosity between the two places that continues to this day.

This war is between those two peoples and no one else. It does not belong to the US and though Europe's physically closer to the action the beef isn't Europe's either.

Not one more cent of US taxpayer money must go to the fraudulent, gay-dancing grifter in charge of the Western "elite's" favorite money laundering mecca. Eggs are $5 a dozen in the US, untold thousands have lost their livelihoods because of the lockdowns concocted by the very same globalist/leftist/Democrat filth now cheerleading for the little gay-dancing grifter and his spendaholic beard, yet we continue sending that piece of garbage more of our money.

Not one more cent. Not one more bullet.

If you truly believe that the West should be directly involved in this dispute, then send your money and your sons into the fight.

Russia won’t need nuclear weapons. It is systematically destroying the Ukrainian and mercenary forces and equipment with its overwhelming use of conventional weapons.

Sending a limited number of a hodge-podge of tanks and vehicles to Ukraine, with no universal ammunition sizes, operation standards, repair standards and a plethora of differing repair parts needed to maintain them is just sending them to the wrecking yard.

Those tanks and vehicles not destroyed outright would have to be transported huge distances back to Poland for repairs by expert mechanics relocated to Poland from countries that built them.

These weapons are not just “big rolling guns that go Boom.” They have complex and non-standard electrical and computerized components and guidance systems that require months of training of crews for them to reliably operate and repair.

Truckloads of ammunition sent for use on some models of tanks won’t fit into the barrels of other differing models.

This entire desperate effort is so fraught with stupidity as to be the obvious work of idiots. It is a logistical nightmare that cannot work.

All the Ukraine cheerleading won’t defeat Russia. Ukraine is losing big-time. This is all just desperation of the West as NATO crumbles and proves its impotence.

The U.S. flatly refuses to send its Abrams tanks to Ukraine because American generals know what Russia will QUICKLY do to those ridiculously expensive tanks.

American weapons systems are massively expensive and cannot be replicated in big numbers without YEARS of manufacture.

The war in Ukraine is one of world history’s most absurd and senseless efforts.

How will Europe defend itself when all of its paltry weapons productions are destroyed to try to save a thoroughly corrupt dictatorship in an irrelevant nation?

Western Europe is committing economic suicide to what end?

The US gets to sit back unscathed and China isn’t hurt directly by this but it’s next on the bad nation list already getting the bad publicity Russia got in the last decade or so before the fighting started.

Well talk about your self fulfilling prophecies; Russia wasn’t hostile towards the west before but you can bet they sure will be now. You can also bet that when they are finished in Ukraine they are gonna come looking and not only at the countries that were supplying money, weapons, training but also to the countries that stole their super yachts and seized their funds. These warmongers have no idea what kind of future they’ve given us with their arrogance

Russia has six new military bases near Greenland and the Arctic. When Trump’s buying Greenland made sense.

Is Ukraine a former Soviet occupied country, or is it an original constituent founding member of the USSR?

Well I guess according to your logic Georgia, Azerbaijan and Armenian shouldn't exist as independent, free countries.

On December 30, 1922, in post-revolutionary Russia, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) is established, comprising a confederation of Russia, Belorussia, Ukraine and the Transcaucasian Federation (divided in 1936 into the Georgian, Azerbaijan and Armenian republics)

This looks and feels like an end-time scenario especially given the prophecy that a time of trouble would erupt and except that the time would be cut short, no flesh would be saved. Time cut short I interpret to mean God’s intervention possibly in the form of the second coming. No flesh saved could be regional or global.

Leaving aside the religious aspect, both sides in this proxy war are feeling around to establish the limits in the context of mutual assured destruction. Putin’s calculus must be this — what can I get away with doing at relatively low risk of nuclear retaliation? Our side (if you want to call it that, I generally don’t at this point) also must be assessing, what can we do without inviting Russian nuclear response? I don’t think Ukraine did all the things that have happened so far entirely by themselves but it has to be made to look that way (for example, the sinking of the Moskva, the damage to the Kerch bridge, the partial liberation of Kherson, and earlier, the defense of Kharkiv and Kyiv.

But I would say from a psychological point of view, if the Russians already think all these events are our work, and they have not gone nuclear, then why not just end the subterfuge, send in huge NATO forces to defend Ukraine, sending Russia notes outlining the limits of engagement (only to the borders and even just cede them Crimea and call that the border), and see if they turn tail and run.

It’s dangerous but allowing this to continue for years with the inevitable risk of some catastrophic miscalculation is perhaps more dangerous.

It’s pretty obvious some here have managed to convince themselves that the plot against Trump was just about Trump and wasnt just a sideshow to the larger psyop to convince everyone that Russia is our mortal enemy, bent on destroying us. Think. THINK. THINK!

Here we go again. Look at the shiny ball in Ukraine while our own country burns to hell.

Nothing, I say again, nothing is more evil and destructive to the human race than the Obama/Clinton/Biden regime and their GloboHomo, deep state masters. They have weaponized ALL federal agencies against the people of America.

Take the COVID jab or lose your job.
You must use the correct pronoun or you will go to jail.
The holy act of Abortion will be sacrosanct.
Open the floodgates to barbarian hordes of criminals, rapist and drug cartels.

Etc. Etc,

But yet, we have suckers worried about Ukraine while their own country here in the USA goes down in flames. /spit and double spit.

I seem to remember that the Democrats demanded that the USSR remove missiles from Cuba, at our doorstep.

Let me then jog your faulty memory. When you say "Democrats" you really should say JFK. When JFK met with Khrushchev in Vienna ...

JFK Was Completely Unprepared For His Summit with Khrushchev
'He just beat the hell out of me,' Kennedy said.

This was just after JFK's ill-advised Bay of Pigs fiasco from which, in the moment, JFK flinched on the follow through. Khrushchev reached the conclusion that JFK could be pushed around, leading Khrushchev to the conclusion that he could put nuclear missiles in Cuba and JFK would do nothing about it. JFK created the problem of nuclear missiles in Cuba in the first place.

JFK's weakness and inexperience got us as close to nuclear armageddon as we have ever been. No credit is due to JFK for avoiding the result of his own blundering before he nearly got us all killed.

In the end, in exchange for the Soviets agreeing to remove nuclear missiles from Cuba, JFK trashed the Monroe doctrine and agreed to let Cuba be a perpetual Soviet client state without any further opposition from the U.S. This left Soviet-supported Castro free to try and foment revolution throughout central and south America.

As it turned out JFK had Addison's disease. JFK had a back injury as well. Because of these two conditions JFK spend most of his adult life gorked up on a variety of medications which also led to his poor performance at Vienna. His condition was hidden from the public by a compliant and worshipful media. (See also Joe Biden.)

JFK's "Best and Brightest" democrat eggheads were inherited by LBJ and promptly got the U.S. into a mess in Vietnam.

Biden and his fellow democrat ‘elites’ want to protect one of the most corrupt counties in the world. Remember, Ukraine hires democrat’s deadbeat whore monger sons - and launders elites ill gotten gain.

Yep. But don't fear. Lunatics like this represent a tiny fraction of the people here. Yeah they are loud, yeah they are stupid but when all is said and done, they are just key board warriors.
