Despite maintaining ‘good relations’ with Moscow, Iran says it will never recognise Crimea and four other regions of Donbas as Russian.
During an interview on Thursday, January 19, with the Turkish TV channel TRT World, Hossein Amir Abdollahian, the Minister of Foreign Affairs for Iran confirmed that Tehran did not recognise Crimea and four other regions of Donbas as Russian.
This will come as a huge blow to President Vladimir Putin who clearly sees the Republic of Iran as an ally. Abdollahian insisted that Crimea, DPR, LPR, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, with reference to the observance of international laws, were Ukrainian territory, as reported by gazeta.ru.
“Therefore, despite the excellent relations between Tehran and Moscow, we did not recognise the separation of Crimea, Luhansk and Donetsk regions from Ukraine. We insist on our consistent principle in foreign policy: when we say that the conflict in Ukraine is not a solution, we believe in our position as a fundamental political principle”, he told the TV channel.

In the future Iran and Turkey will be allied and control the Black Sea, when Russia is weakened.
Hmmm. Maybe I ran remembers all the times Putin was promising them missiles and other things, and he never delivered.
Iran is going to Annex some places of it’s own and then they will ‘talk’................
All he has to do is send pallets of cash and presto everything is good again
I don’t see how it’s much of a blow. Falls more into the “And???” category.
Iran may need that, since Saudi Arabia may shut them out of the Persian Gulf.
Not good. Not good at all.
Well Crimea River…
What, did the Russian check for the purchase of Iranian suicide drones bounce?
It’s a rough day for Putin when even the Iranians won’t support his evil.
Iran borders the Caspian Sea and not the Black Sea.
“Unlike Western countries, Iran did not impose anti-Russian sanctions...”
“Iranian Foreign Minister Abdollahian expressed the opinion that the main reason for the conflict in Ukraine is “the provocative actions of NATO and some Western states”.”
This is FAR MORE important to Putin. As far as the liberated areas (and future liberated areas) in Ukraine are concerned, they’ll be recognized by all (or at least most) countries, as a condition for a final peace deal ending the war.
Point taken, but I do eventually see Iran and Turkey allying.
There’s no honor among thieves.
“Point taken, but I do eventually see Iran and Turkey allying.”
Iran and Turkey come together on some topics like their desire to eradicate the Kurds and Armenians. But for the most part they would be at odds because of their religious divide. Any alliance of theirs would only last so long as either thinks they’re getting an advantage from the arrangement.
I think it’s fair to say that their possible alliance would be more like a non-aggression pact than an actual commitment to have their forces fight side by side.
He would have to send more pallets of cash to Iran than Joe Biden is, which I don't think is possible. Nobody outspends the US - nobody!
;>)
“There’s no honor among thieves.”
I’ll grant the Iranians the possibility that they see Russia’s actions as illegitimate. They are a theocracy after all and Islam does have some severe ideas about theft, especially theft under the guise of deception.
Putin insisting his forces were just ‘exercising’ before the invasion of Ukraine and then the lies about the ‘Little Green Men’ before that are probably not playing well with the clerics in Tehran.
Because if Putin lied then then he will certainly lie again.
Ok. It’s over now. Everyone knows how the entire world follows Iran’s lead. (snicker)
