Apache has been accused of cultural appropriation and Indigenous erasure
Natives in Tech, a charitable organization founded to empower Native American peoples by offering networking events among other initiatives, has urged The Apache Software Foundation (ASF) to change its name out of respect for the Indigenous culture that it is said to appropriate.
In a blog post(opens in new tab), the group criticizes Apache for failing to abide by its code of conduct, citing the tech firm’s words: “be careful in the words that [they] choose”.
The company’s name was said to come about when co-founder, Brian Behlendorf, watched a documentary about famed Native American chief Geronimo.
According to Behlendorf, what happened to the Apache by the Westerners that colonized the United States “almost romantically represented what he felt [the company was] doing with this web-server project.”
The article accuses Behlendorf of Indigenous erasure: the process of “removing, re-framing, and undermining Indigenous presence, past and present”, highlighting the eight federally recognized tribes in Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Arizona that carry the Apache name today.
“On occasion, we have been asked about claims about use of the ‘Apache’ name by the Apache Native American communities," an extract on the company’s website(opens in new tab) reads.
"During its twenty-five years of use of ‘Apache’ as part of its name, the ASF has never been involved in any legal dispute with Native American communities or any other party in relation to the use of the ‘Apache’ name.”
Like the company says, this isn’t the first time that the ASF has come under fire for its name and related imagery. Its feather logo has previously been challenged as a stereotype for “Indianness”, according to another collaborative web post, which calls for an end to the use of Native American names, images, and mascots by companies and sports teams.
An ASF spokesperson told TechRadar Pro: "We hear the concerns from the Native American people and are listening. As a non-profit run by volunteers, changes will need time to be carefully weighed with members, the board, and our legal team. Our members are exploring alternative ways to address it, but we don’t have anything to share at this time."
But don’t be disparaging those that lived lives in relative harmony with their environment.
*************
You do realize that whole bunch of crap was invented by early 19th-century European Romanticists. The entire “Noble Savage” line is their creation.
Before they had horses, those oh-so-caring environmentalists would chase entire herds of buffalo over the sides of cliffs by setting the plains on fire. Just to harvest what little the band could carry away.
True, the Apache didn’t have buffalo herds to chase to mass death, but they were so savage to everyone, their name came to mean “enemy” to everyone.
Yeah. Great people.
They’re conquered. they exist on sufference. They need to learn, or soon be taught, so sit down, shut up and stop drawing attention to themselves before the rest of us get fed up with their crap.
Also, a portion of “modern medicine” was derived from their knowledge and experience of local flora.
The earliest explorers would likely have all perished from scurvy had they not been instructed by the savages.
If they were all like you, it would be on.
LOL. God help us when Greeks start getting bent out of shape about companies named after Greek Gods or other Greek names.
Uh huh.
Simple. Simply rename the company after the French Gangsters of the early 1900s.

The Pontiac car isn’t made any more grandfather right ensues.
How about you change your name spokes person?
“Natives in Tech, a charitable organization...”
Wonder how big of a grant the filthy Union government gives these gonefs?
Software always needs continuous patching, so the name is appropriate.
Tech is hopelessly woke. I would be shocked if the foundation comes away with name intact.
Unless they make some sort of a huge donation somewhere.(a shakedown)
Gay men urge the Green Bay Packers to change their name.
This is one of the most stupid campaigns ever.
Fire Water Software?
I’ve been wondering when unstable people would realize that the software that powers millions of websites is called Apache.
Tell them to pound sand and cut the crap.
It’s amazing how these idiots pretending to represent racial/ethnic minorities want to erase those minorities from the popular culture. They’re evil.
Speaking for American Indians (in addition to others) who were members of the U.S. Army Air Corps, and later, the U. S. Army Air Force, and flew or maintained aircraft with “nose art” respecting the courage of warriors - as well as brothers in arms who flew with the Air Apaches - I claim that the organization (in the article) that seeks wokeism on its stated cultural angst, does not have standing.
Secondly, how do they know it's Apache like ah-PATCH-ee and not Apache like ah-PAHSH?
“Our members are exploring alternative ways to address it, but we don’t have anything to share at this time.”
“We have to calculate how much money it will cost to get them to go away.”
